Keen Teens Theatre: High School Students
Feb 3, 4, 5
 Season Ten of Keen Teens is launching, which is Keen Company's FREE educational theater production for high school students in the New York City area. We will hold auditions for this year's plays on February 3rd, 4th and5th at Theatre Row Studios in Manhattan. 

Keen Teens is a unique program which seeks to improve the quality of plays written for high school students by commissioning scripts from highly regarded professional playwrights. This year, in addition to two plays, we will also be producing a new musical!

This season's writers are Nick Gandiello, Jason Kim, Max Vernon, Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen; all of them are creating 30-minute plays that we'll present at Theatre Row, after which they'll be published by Samuel French.

The plays are performed by high school students as part of a free program which allows students an immersive experience in new play production. The plays are all designed and directed by theatre professionals, allowing the students a unique opportunity to work alongside some of the most talented emerging artists working in New York today.

For the past twenty-five years MCNDHS has focused on educating overage, under-credited high school students. We are still recruiting students for our night program which will run from 3:10 p.m. - 9:30 p.m., Monday - Friday.
This program is specifically designed for older students. It is not too late for older transfer students, both ELL's and non-ELL's, to register. We are accepting students who have:
Turned 17 before July 1, 2015
Earned a minimum of 17 high school credits anywhere in the world
Passed the ELA Regents or the Global History Regents or the U.S. History Regents with a 65 (Students coming from outside of NY State will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.)
After they register online, students should bring their Permanent Record, Student Evaluation Report (RESI on ATS) and their Individual Education Plan (IEP) to an Open House. Qualified students interested in our program will be set up with an interview appointment.

Summer Arts Institute
Deadline: February 5 

The Summer Arts Institute (SAI) is a tuition-free, intensive, arts program for NYC public school students entering grades 8-12, held at Frank Sinatra School of the Arts High School in Astoria, Queens. Students can major in dance, theater, instrumental music (band), vocal music, film, string orchestra or visual arts. The program is designed for students at an intermediate or advanced level of study in their chosen discipline. SAI offers a unique opportunity for students to work with DOE arts specialists, partnering cultural organizations, and guest artists. This experienced team of arts professionals guides students in building a portfolio or audition skills for their next level of study; an arts-focused high school, college, university, or conservatory. SAI focuses on 3 areas:  Developing students’ artistic skills and creativity  Broadening students’ awareness of the arts  Helping students recognize and explore career options in the art and arts-related industries This intensive summer arts experience connects students to community and cultural resources along with access to careers and lifelong learning in the arts. Students who complete the program in good standing are eligible to receive a ½ unit of credit that may be applied towards an elective arts credit or a Regents or local diploma-major sequence upon approval from their school. Google invites Black Girls CODE to a Made with Code event

Your child can learn to play tennis for free! NYJTL’s Community Tennis Program is for children and youth who are:

For all NYJTL Community Tennis Programs, registration is OPEN. Players can come and register at any time during the season. Registration can be done in person ONLY during the program’s hours of operation. No online registrations. A reminder that this is not an application, it is a registration. No one will be rejected or put on a waiting list. Attendance on any given day is optional.
Racquets and balls are available for children to use during program hours. The only thing participants need to bring is their own water bottle and tennis sneakers.

YMCA Global Teens program: Seattle/South Korea
Ask questions at the Summer Opportunities Fair Fri, Feb 5!

YMCA Global Teens service-learning trips are FREE but teens must be active members of the YMCA in order to be selected (also free - with our Strong Kids applications). Applications for the Vanderbilt YMCA teens programs are in the rack outside 716.  We have two Global Teen trips scheduled for this coming summer.  A trip to Seattle Washington and a trip to South Korea with the Seoul YMCA. Both programs will focus on environmental issues and civic engagement.

Eligible applicants must be:

• A participant of a core Y program
• Be available to participate in weekly activities leading up to the trip dates in July.

The program is supported by the NYC Center for Youth Employment and the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City. Ladders for Leaders gives students a unique opportunity to explore their interests and discover new ones through:  Pre-employment Training: Receive help with resume and cover letter writing, and interviewing skills. UAG @ "SLUT The Play" and "Now We are Men"!

SLUT the play is coming back to NYC for its longest run yet! Developed by and starring real high school students (members of the award-winning The Arts Effect All-Girl Theater Company), the critically-acclaimed play SLUT tackles rape culture in the lives of young people. Every performance will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A between the cast, creators, and audience. Most recently, our team traveled to Washington, D.C. and performed for 2,000 guests including members of congress, celebrities, leaders of national and global organizations, hundreds of students and general public. The event included a talk back with Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), the creator of House of Cards, Beau Willimon, and Editor in Chief of Glamour Magazine, Cindi Leive. To date, SLUT has been produced all across the country (NY, CA, MN, ND, MA, DC, MT) and the world ) (Sydney, Australia, Mexico City, Mexico and Nova Scotia, Canada), the team has launched the StopSlut social movement engaging students nationwide in action planning, and the directors/creators Katie Cappiello & Meg McInerney have presented at Talks@Google, TedX, and The International Conference on Masculinities. NAYLC Program

The NAYLC program will support high school students - who are immigrants or children/grandchildren of immigrants - in their pathways to success, and in developing skills and knowledge in support of their leadership development, community engagement and advocacy, civic participation, financial management and pursuit of higher education. NAYLC participants will engage in a series of interactive workshops in New York City on Wednesdays @ 4:30pm- 7pm in 2016 on: - February 10 & 24; - March 9 & 23; - April 6, 20 & 27; Participants will be given the opportunity to complete 12 or more hours of volunteer service between February 10 and April 27, 2016, where they will apply what they learned in the workshops to activities in support of immigrant communities and nonprofit organizations that serve them. YCteen Spring Writing Internship

 We invite Urban Assembly students to apply for our spring writing internship, which begins in late February. YCteen writers are mentored by a professional editor as they learn memoir-writing and journalism skills. Our writers get to be a voice for other teens, and their work is published in print and online. Our requirements are as follows:  Writers must be between the ages of 15 and 20.  We’re open to writers from 1-6 p.m., Mon.-Thurs. Within that time frame, writers must commit to a minimum of two days a week, two hours a day (for a total of at least 4 hours per week).  Writers must commit to participating for a minimum of 3 months. If you have interested students who can meet our requirements, please direct them to read our write for us page and then fill out our online application at and submit it by Friday, February 12, 2016. Those selected for an interview will be notified and scheduled during the week of February 15th, and internships will start the week of February 22nd, unless your student requires a different start date. While we want to take on as many writers as possible, we do have limited capacity, so if you have a particularly strong candidate, please let me know as soon as you can. Museum of the City of New York: Surpass Regents Prep Program
Deadline: February 12th 

 Do you need to sharpen your test-taking skills for the U.S. History and Government Regents exam? Apply for Surpass, a free afterschool program that prepares students for the June 2016 exam. In the last two years, the Museum of the City of New York’s (MCNY) Surpass program helped 61 out of 71 students pass the U.S. History Regents exam by offering intensive training in test-taking strategies and content. Students learn how to excel at answering document-based and multiple choice questions and writing thematic essay, while studying core topics in U.S. History addressed in the Museum’s groundbreaking exhibition Activist New York. Topics include abolition, women’s suffrage, labor rights, the Civil Rights Movement, and more! Students will also take behind-the-scenes visits to the archive to view photographs, cartoons, and documents to practice DBQs with actual historical sources in the Museum’s collection. Some highlights of the program include:  The class includes visits to the Museum exhibitions, primarily the Activist New York exhibition  Pizza is provided at all sessions  Students can add this course to their college applications  A phenomenal instructor who teaches courses at Brooklyn College  Students will receive visual flash cards and sample essays to prepare for the exam  The class is free! NYC GREAT! (Girls Reaching Every Apex Together) is designed to provide experiences that support the development of leadership and communication skills in young women who are currently attending high school. As they pursue college and career options, young women must uniquely navigate issues around leadership style, gender equity and identity in ways that young men don’t have to. The program aims to serve as a vehicle for young women to find their voice, articulate their purpose and to become architects of their own future as it pertains to successfully graduating from high school and making college and career choices. The program launched in the Bronx during spring 2015 and is now ready to launch in Brooklyn in 2016. The goal of each interaction with participants is to have them consider, “Why settle for average when you can be GREAT?” We expect a GREAT Girl to:  Be comfortable in her leadership and ability to motivate others  Display academic motivation and self-determination  Maintain good academic and attendance standings  Have self-confidence with respect to college/career choices  Participate in leadership community service or volunteer activities  Aspire to attend college and/or pursue a career The program focuses on the development of leadership and communication skills. Potential candidates are engaging, interested in the development of self, and can be characterized as all-around productive individuals. Students who are selected are expected to participate in leadership conferences held once a month on Saturdays at St. Francis College. Citizens' Committee for Children of New York (CCC)

Community service credit is available as well as expanding leadership and civic engagement opportunities.   CCC is a multi-issue child advocacy organization that seeks to ensure that every child is healthy, housed, educated, and safe. YouthAction NYC engages New York City youth from diverse backgrounds in civic participation and advocacy. Students who participate in the YCLC will:
  • Gain the skills to advocate on behalf of themselves, their schools, and their communities.
  • Learn how to conduct hands-on research, such as public polling and site visits.
  • Meet with government officials to discuss their ideas for improving New York City.
  • Become better leaders through problem solving and critical thinking.
  • Strengthen their communication and public speaking skills.
  • Make lifelong friends with the diverse group of peers in the program!

Futures and Options Programs
First Deadline: Feb 12

1) Career Essentials – Spring (9th-12th Graders):
Students in Career Essentials participate in 12 two-hour workshops facilitated by our experienced program coordinators that focus on work readiness skills. Workshops are held at Futures and Options, which is located in the financial district, once a week after school. Participants learn communication, presentation and interviewing skills, workplace etiquette, time management and resume writing. Two career exploration field trips offer students exposure to different career options and companies. Students also have the opportunity to network and learn with their peers from different boroughs and high schools.

We will offer the program on Wednesdays and Thursdays this spring, and have 50 open spots. Even though the program is open to all students, we mostly target 9th and 10th graders, and students we feel are not yet ready for the world of work. The spring program will begin March 9th. The due date for the application is Friday, February 12th, 2016.

2) Urban Leadership Fellows Internship Program – Summer (12th Graders with an interest in finance):
In 1992, The Municipal Forum of New York developed the Urban Leadership Fellows (ULF) Program with the mission of introducing talented young people with an interest in careers in financeto the municipal securities industry. Key components of the program include:
· A paid, full-time summer internship at a financial institution, law firm or government agency
· Pre-internship orientations and Excel trainings
· A professional mentor (in addition to an internship supervisor)
· A full day public speaking training by a leading communications trainer
· A trip to Washington DC to learn about the intersection of finance and government policy
· A $500 book award (to use towards textbook costs next year) at the conclusion of the summer
· The opportunity for college scholarships. All alumni who maintain the GPA requirement receive a $1,000 (annual) scholarship
· Networking opportunities with the 40 other students in the ULF cohort and with 22 years’ worth of ULF alumni.

High school seniors can apply to this program on the Futures and Options website: The application deadline is Friday, February 12, 2016. The ULF Program is open to high school SENIORS only. The criteria for selection include:

· An interest in a career in finance, business or law
· Availability to work full-time for the duration of the six-week, paid internship
· A 3.0 GPA or higher

3) The Internship Program – Year-Round (11th - 12th Graders):

Students in the Internship Program participate in paid mentored internships at New York City businesses, nonprofits, and government agencies. The interns work 12-15 hours per week after school or up to 40 hours a week during the summer. Additionally, interns receive ongoing support from Futures and Options program staff and attend regularly scheduled work-readiness workshops and career exploration field trips. The program is open to students ranging from rising high school juniors to rising college freshman.

The Internship Program operates on a rolling basis, and students can apply now to be considered for both spring and summer opportunities. The final deadline to be considered for the summer is April 15th. Interested students can apply online:

College Goal NY: FAFSA Completion Events
Ongoing until February 13th 

College Goal NY is hosting FAFSA Completion Events that aim to help college-bound students complete the most important tool in securing financial aid: the FAFSA. The FAFSA completion events are scheduled in targeted areas throughout the state of NY that have a history of high financial need and where students submit a disproportionately small number of online FAFSA applications. At each event, students and families receive hands on assistance with their online applications and get answers to questions specific to their circumstances. Participants can enter a drawing to win $500, provided through the College Access Challenge Grant, to help pay for college costs. FIT's Precollege Workshops are fun, short programs that will introduce you to some of the unusual and creative topics that we specialize in at FIT. Hudson Guild Tech Up Application
Apply Now! Rolling through February 1st 

 Hudson Guild Tech Up participants will increase their computer literacy and digital skills while developing a work history in the technology field. This education will ultimately lead each participant to become a marketable employee, intern or student in the information technology and technology-related sector. All participants at the completion of tech up curriculum will receive an internships or part time employment opportunity. Eligibility: Tech Up participation is offered to high school or neighborhood youth between the ages of 16-24, who have limited to no technology experience, looking to enhance their education, jumpstart their career, or explore opportunities in the information technology field. Preference will be given to those who live in NYCHA Elliott and Fulton Housing. General Information: Tech Up participants are expected to attend class twice weekly, for 2-3 hours each session. Two cohorts (one morning and one afternoon) will allow participants flexibility to work or attend school. Winter Registration: Classes start late Jan

We’ll be offering three sections of Photo I in Black-and-White this term, the ideal starting place for students with digital photography experience (or no prior photography experience!) interested in working in the darkroom for the first time. For students with prior darkroom experience, we’ll be offering two sections of Photo I in Color as well as two theme-based Photo II in Black-and-White classes: one section focusing on Lighting for Portraiture (ideal for more advanced teen photographers, using portraiture as an entry point for understanding the technical and aesthetic components of studio and natural lighting) and one section called The Self-Published Artist(focusing on learning how to extend the reach of your photography through handmade books and zines).

Registration for the winter opens on December 1, but scholarship applications are now available (and are attached). As always, we reserve 50% of the spaces in every Teen Academy class for students with financial need. The scholarship application deadline is December 18, though the sooner we receive an application, the more likely we are to be able to accommodate your students.

Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program

The Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program is a 7-week intensive computer science course that embeds classrooms in technology companies and universities. The ACLU’s Summer Advocacy Institute will bring together a diverse group of students entering their junior and senior years of high school from across the United States to participate in an advanced, firsthand learning experience for the next generation of social justice advocates. Through an intensive 7-day program, students will learn directly from lawyers, lobbyists, community activists, journalists, and other experts working to defend the civil rights and liberties critical to a free and open society. Princeton University High School Journalism Program

The Princeton University High School Journalism Program is an all-expenses-paid 10 day summer program for high school student journalists from low-income backgrounds that will take place on the campus of Princeton University. The program is entering its 15th year; since 2002, approximately 300 students from high schools across the country have participated. The program’s goal is to diversify college and professional newsrooms by encouraging outstanding students from low-income backgrounds to pursue careers in journalism. Classes at the program are taught by reporters and editors from The New York Times, The Washington Post, The New Yorker, The Daily Beast, Time, National Journal, New York Magazine, The New Republic, ESPN the Magazine, CNN and NPR, among other media outlets. Students meet with numerous Princeton professors, as well as Princeton’s president and admissions officers. They report an investigative story, cover a professional sports event, produce a TV segment, and publish their own newspaper. And they receive guidance on the college admissions process not only during the 10 days of the program, but also during the fall of their senior year of high school. Students selected for the program will have all their costs, including the cost of travel to and from Princeton, paid for by the program. The first round of the application process should be filled out online here: Those students selected to advance to the second round of the application process will be notified in March. Weill Cornell Medical College: High School – Medical School Mentorship Program

 Weill Cornell Medical College’s “Women in Medicine” group is thrilled to announce the second year of the “High School – Medical School Mentorship Program.” This program is for female high school rising seniors who show strong interest and excellence in science and medicine. The program will commence this spring semester and will continue through the fall semester of the 2016-2017 school year. In joining the program, students will have the opportunity to be mentored by current female medical students about the process of pursuing a career in medicine. Students will also be invited to participate in two events this spring and two events next fall. At the events, students will benefit from interacting with doctors from various specialties, hear from a panel of medical students, visit the anatomy lab, and much more. For example, this year’s program included a panel discussion with medical school students about the process of getting into medical school and a medical specialty “Speed-Dating” event that introduced students to various medical specialties and will conclude with a tour of Weill Cornell Medical College and a visit to the anatomy lab. We are seeking students who:  Show strong interest and excellence in science and medicine  Are service-oriented and demonstrate empathy  Are seeking mentors for guidance in pursuing a career in medicine  Can demonstrate a commitment to participate in a long term program focused on medicine

Individuals, who can show that they meet the conditions listed above after completing an application for apprenticeship, will be afforded an oral interview. All applicants for apprenticeship are required to report to a collection site designated by the organization for a substance abuse screening.

All applicants who wish to receive consideration for military training must submit form DD-214 to verify military experience.

Carey Gabay, an attorney and public servant, was tragically killed as an innocent victim of gun violence in September 2015 at the age of 43. In his honor, The State University of New York has created the Carey Gabay Scholarship Program to provide financial assis-tance to five incoming SUNY State-operated campus students who exemplify Carey’s commitment to social justice, leadership, and mentoring, as well as his personal story of succeeding academically despite an economically disadvantaged background.

Carey grew up living in public housing and attending public school in the Bronx, New York. After a success-ful high school career, he went on to graduate from Harvard University and Harvard Law School. He has long been committed to public service and giving back. While at Harvard University, he ran to become the president of his undergraduate student body. In recent years, he worked tirelessly in public service, first as an Assistant Counsel to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and more recently as First Deputy Counsel for the Empire State Development Corporation.

The Carey Gabay Scholarship Program will annually award full-ride scholarships to five students to attend State University of New York State-operated campus beginning in the 2016-17 school year. These scholarships will cover all costs of attendance, including tuition, room and board, college fees, books and supplies, and transportation and personal expenses. These awards will be targeted to students who – like Carey – achieved academic excellence despite an economically disadvantaged background.

In order to be eligible to apply for the Carey Gabay Memorial Scholarship, a student must meet the following conditions:Student must be a current New York State resident;Student must be an incoming freshman at a State University of New York State operated campus who will be matriculated and enrolled full time;Student must demonstrate significant financial need as determined by the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA);Student’s high school record must demonstrate high academic achievement, including a minimum cumulative grade point average of 90;Student must submit an essay regarding challenges overcome during the course of the student's academic career, as well as his or her personal commitment to mentoring, leadership, and social justice; andStudent must submit two letters of recommendation from teachers or community members.In order to continue receiving the complete four-year award:Student must maintain full-time enrollment for any semester in which they receive an award;Student must be in good academic standing with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 at the end of their freshmen year and thereafter;Student must adhere to the Student Code of Conduct;Student must demonstrate commitment to social justice and giving back to the community by volunteering a minimum of 15 hours per semester. Harlem RBI

Harlem RBI provides inner-city youth with opportunities to Play, Learn and Grow. Since its founding in 1991, Harlem RBI has grown to serve more than 1,500 boys and girls annually, ages 5-22, providing them with year-round sports, educational and enrichment activities. Harlem RBI is currently seeking students to join its afterschool programs. These programs are for students to have an opportunity to play organized baseball or softball, while also receiving academic support, joining a positive community, and getting support to reach their goals on and off the field. In addition to playing on teams, youth will meet regularly with Program Coordinators, participate in team activities, and access free tutoring, college counseling, scholarships, and more. Preference will be given to students who live and/or go to school in East Harlem or the South Bronx, since students will be expected to attend afterschool programming at Harlem RBI. Mentoring @ UAG (Grades 9-10)

The Governor's Committee on Scholastic Achievement (GCSA) matches 9th & 10th Grade students with mentors at businesses in NYC. Mentors introduce students to the professional world and different career paths to help students prepare for college and their futures. Mentors are also fun and caring, and support students throughout high school.

GCSA is a weekly program that will meet on the same day every week. Every other week, you will travel with fellow students to your mentor's workplace to meet with them. On alternate weeks, you will attend school-based after school enrichment to work on exciting projects, learn new skills, and explore opportunities in NYC. You can also anticipate opportunities to participate in trips, college visits, special events and, upon attainment of goals as the years progress, paid internships.

Manhattan Neighborhood Network's Youth Barrio Firehouse has producer certification programs starting in January!  We offer 5-6 week television and video production for NYC youths ages 14-24. These free courses take place at our Harlem location after school twice a week. Year Up New York

 Year Up is an intensive, one-year program that combines hands-on skill development, college credits, and internships at some of America's top companies, preparing students for success in careers in technology or business, and in higher education. 84% of our graduates are employed or attending college full-time within four months of graduation, and earn an average of $15 per hour, or $30,000 per year. The program consists of 5 months of classes in technical and professional skills, followed by a 6 month internship with one of our corporate partners.
