Culinary Innovation Day
November 6, 2014 

The Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) is holding a Culinary Innovation Day for high school students on November 6, 2014 at the Microsoft building, 11 Times Square, from 4:30pm-8:00 pm. This free event will feature Master Chef Vikas Khanna from India and will teach students about entrepreneurship within the culinary industry. Teams of students will create innovative culinary business ideas and upload them to NFTE's World Series of Innovation website. Selected teams may win startup capital ($) for their ideas. Hunter College Now Spring Courses (Juniors & Seniors)

Deadline December 1

Hunter College Now is a FREE program through which high school students can take real credit bearing college courses while still in high school. Students can choose from a small list of courses and take classes on the Hunter College campus like a real college student. The benfits of these courses include: earning some college credit before you even start college!  demonstrating to colleges and scholarship programs that you are ready for college level work preparing yourself for the rigors of college classes
Successful completion of one or more college level courses while in high school makes you a much more competitive applicant to colleges and scholarship programs as a senior. Interested students must fill out the online application AND send Hunter their transcript, PSAT/SAT scores, and parent consent form (downloadable from our website).

CTE Internship
Seniors! Show your working papers and send resume to Ms. Hogarty to obtain an internship in your Pathway. This 10-week paid opportunity requires HR processing prior to approval to work - time is running out to participate in the Fall Cycle!

The Firehouse offers 5-week film production training and certification classes to Manhattan residents ages 15-20 attending school in Manhattan are eligible to apply. All classes are held at 175 East 104th Street.

YOUTH FIELD PRODUCTION

Youth Field Production is a 5-week training and certification course where students produce a 3-5 minute individual project using Sony HD field production cameras, and learn video editing using Final Cut Pro software. Final projects will be for broadcast on the MNN Youth Channel and the web. Continue on for internship credit with an additional 5 week independent project.
Youth interested in taking classes must complete the application online, and bring in the supplemental application materials by November 6th, 2014 to confirm enrollment!

NYS SUMMER SCHOOL OF THE ARTS

The Summer of 2015 will mark the 46th year of operation for the schools that form the New York State Summer School of the Arts. This program, with its seven component summer residential Schools, are administered by the New York State Education Department. Recognized as one of the finest programs of its kind in the nation, over 15,000 high school age students have become part of this unique summer experience. Alumni of the program will attest to the success of the schools in helping high school students with special talents identify and pursue career choices in all fields of the fine arts and performing arts at an early age. The Schools provide opportunities for all New York State students who qualify through auditions, to receive the highest level of training and instruction.

The Summer Schools of the Arts are directed and staffed by internationally acclaimed artists and companies such as the New York City Ballet and ThePhiladelphia Orchestra. Students work in small groups and in one-on-one sessions with professionals and with other students of similar ability. NYSSSA's goal is clear: to provide intensive, preprofessional training programs for New York State's most gifted and motivated young artists and those who are considering careers in the arts or entertainment industries. A student's time at NYSSSA could be life changing!

The schools provide intensive training in an environment where students experience the rigorous discipline of the daily life of a professional artist. The program is open to all New York State high school age students who qualify through auditions. NYSSSA Programs qualify students for one full unit of high school credit with the student's home district approval. Appropriate documentation is sent to the student's school at the close of the program.

Harlem RBI

Harlem RBI provides inner-city youth with opportunities to Play, Learn and Grow. Since its founding in 1991, Harlem RBI has grown to serve more than 1,500 boys and girls annually, ages 5-22, providing them with year-round sports, educational and enrichment activities. Harlem RBI is currently seeking students to join its afterschool programs. These programs are for students to have an opportunity to play organized baseball or softball, while also receiving academic support, joining a positive community, and getting support to reach their goals on and off the field. In addition to playing on teams, youth will meet regularly with Program Coordinators, participate in team activities, and access free tutoring, college counseling, scholarships, and more. Preference will be given to students who live and/or go to school in East Harlem or the South Bronx, since students will be expected to attend afterschool programming at Harlem RBI. Ballet Hispanico School of Dance

The General Program at the Ballet Hispanico School of Dance offers something for everyone. Developed with the highest level of artistic excellence offered at any dance institution, our program supports the recreational dancer interested in taking one to three classes a week. With over 25 classes a week in a wide array of genres--from ballet and flamenco to hip-hop, salsa, and jazz--our students receive not only a thorough grounding in the primary techniques, but also specialized training in the rich and varied Latin American dance traditions, which for many is their cultural heritage.

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation: College Scholarship Program
Deadline: November 4th 

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation invites applications for its College Scholarship Program, the largest
undergraduate scholarship in the country. Recipients will be awarded as much as $40,000 each year for four years for tuition, books, living expenses, and other required fees. Up to 40 spaces are available to high-achieving high school seniors with financial need who seek to attend the nation’s best four-year colleges and universities. In addition to financial support, the program offers an on-staff adviser to help students transition to college and maximize their campus experiences, a network of extraordinary scholars, and opportunities students might not otherwise have, such as funding for internships, study abroad, and graduate study. Selection criteria focus on exceptional academic ability and achievements, financial need, persistence, a desire to help others, and leadership. The application review includes analysis of grades, participation in available advanced courses, student essays, letters of recommendation, and family finances. There is no application fee. The Point: Photography Classes
Apply Now! 

A collaborative program with the International Center of Photography (ICP), ICP at The Point teaches youth students the fundamentals of black-and-white photography. Students as young as nine take part in weekly after school and summer classes. The classes are free, and the program runs after school from September 29 – December 11, 2014. Social Circus

A.C.T.I.O.N.
A.C.T.I.O.N. engages 20 stipended youth activists three times per week who work to identify social and environmental justice issues facing the Hunts Point community. Participants create and manage campaigns with the goals of developing ongoing youth-led solutions.

Futures and Options: Core Internship Program
Deadline: Rolling 

The Futures and Options Core Internship Program is offered to 11th and 12th grade students from NYC high schools. Private and nonprofit businesses are welcome to join as internship partners throughout the year, and represent various employment sectors – financial, small business, technology, real estate, retail, and nonprofit. In addition to their paid internships, students will attend monthly work-readiness workshops and meet for special career development and exploration field trips. To be eligible, students must be:

 A high school students living in NYC

 16 years of age or older

 Currently in 11th or 12th grade

 Legally able to work in the U.S.

 Able to work 10-15 hours per week after school, and attend workshops and trips

Futures and Options accepts applications for the Core Internship Program on a rolling basis, but students are encouraged to apply early before spaces are filled. Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Abroad is an innovative high school student exchange program between Americans and people from countries with significant Muslim populations. Sixty-five full scholarships are available to American high school students to live with host families and study for one academic year in countries that may include: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Macedonia, Malaysia, Morocco, Oman, Philippines, South Africa, Thailand, and Turkey.

Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) is an academic year program for high school and gap year students to study abroad in Germany. Tech Kids Unlimited (TKU) is a technology-based educational organization, for kids ages 7 to 18 with special needs, which empowers and inspires the next generation of digital natives to learn, create, develop and share the tools of technology. TKU teaches technology to kids who learn differently.





Parsons Scholars Pre-College Program
Deadline: November 11th 

The Parsons Scholars Program is a multi-year scholarship program for New York City public school students interested in art and design study. Accepted students participate from 10th through 12th grade. Students have the opportunity to explore a wide variety of studio subjects to gain skills and knowledge that will help them gain admission and be successful in colleges of art and design. Students earn 4 college credits and a Pre-College certificate from Parsons upon successful completion of the Parsons Scholars Program. In addition to these classes, students participate in workshops and fieldtrips to gain exposure to art and design fields. During the fall and spring semesters, programming is held on Saturdays from 9am-5pm. During the summer, students are enrolled in a rigorous, two to four-week intensive course that meets daily from 9am-4pm. Attendance to all programming is mandatory. Eligible students are:
 Current 10th graders from NYC public schools

 Students who demonstrate financial need (as determined by NYS HEOP and Free/Reduced Lunch)

 Students with a strong interest and commitment to art and design studies and obtaining a higher
education in art and design

 Students with limited access to art and design opportunities and guidance through the college application process

 Students maintaining a C average or higher

9/11 Memorial Museum: Museum Ambassador Program
Deadline: November 20th 

The Museum Ambassador program is a unique semester-long afterschool program for students in grades 10-12. Offering a behind-the-scenes look into the 9/11 Memorial Museum, students examine the Museum’s collection and the ongoing themes and issues raised by 9/11. With this foundation, students create, plan, and lead a tour of the Museum for members of their own community. In addition, Ambassadors gain professional experience by leading hands-on workshops for intergenerational audiences during six Saturday programs. Ambassadors who successfully complete the program earn a $1,000 stipend. Transportation costs are covered for all participants. The deadline to apply is November 20th. LEDA Scholars Program
Deadline: November 14th 

Each year, LEDA finds and recruits approximately 60 LEDA Scholars. Scholars are high-achieving, low-income students from communities that are underrepresented at our nation’s top colleges and universities and in the nation’s leadership sectors. LEDA engages in a national recruitment effort to identify talented, low-income students who demonstrate leadership potential who do not have access to support that would enable them to attend our nation’s top colleges and universities. LEDA Scholars will participate in a summer institute. This institute, held on the campus of Princeton University, is an intensive seven-week program that includes leadership training, writing instruction, standardized test preparation, and college guidance. Scholars also receive on-going support and guidance to help achieve academic success in college. To be eligible for admission to LEDA, a student must be:
 A junior in a public high school
 A U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
 Coming from a low-income family (generally $55,000 or less yearly income, with exceptions)
 First-generation college students
 Enrolled in a rigorous HS course schedule
 Cumulative GPA in top 10% of his/her class
 Strong analytical, reading and writing skills
 Above national average standardized test scores for any of the following exams: PSAT, SAT, PLAN, ACT

Museum of Jewish Heritage: Apprenticeship Program

The Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial to the Holocaust – has an Apprenticeship Program that offers NYCDOE high school students a challenging program of study and work. This Apprenticeship is designed to give students a behind-the-scenes look at what it is like to work in this history museum and to explore Jewish heritage as well as their own heritage. During the spring, apprentices will receive an after-school training to prepare them for the summer. Over the summer, apprentices will work full-time in different museum departments and also lead tours. Apprentices are paid for their participation in the program. Studio Museum in Harlem: Expanding the Walls

Applications are now available for the Studio Museum in Harlem’s Expanding the Walls (ETW) program. ETW is a deeply engaging photography-based program that uses the work of renowned photographer James VanDerZee as a catalyst for discussion and art-making. ETW participants work with a diverse group of arts professionals to explore issues related to community, history, and culture while learning the basics of photography. The program ends with an exhibition of student and VanDerZee photographs in the Studio Museum’s galleries. Participating students will receive a stipend for completing this program. GIT Lit! Moveable Game Jam
November 22, 2014 

Movable Game Jams are an initiative of Mozilla Hive NYC Learning Network, where youth organizations collaborate to host interactive gaming experiences that teach youth about game design, and give them hands-on experience making and hacking games for themselves! Alongside the Game Jam, the Freedman Home will host a "Hacker Play Spaze!" event that will be open to students. That event will include interactive workshops that will teach students basic concepts of computer coding as they create hybrid genre bending beats and hack, or remix their own videos. That evening, the Freedman Home will also host an all-ages "intelligent" hip-hop concert starting at 5pm.

New York Film Academy: City-Wide High School Film & Acting Scholarship

The New York Film Academy is a unique educational institution, devoted to providing the most focused filmmaking,acting, and animation instruction in the world. Our film school’s workshops offer an intensive, hands-on experience which gives students the opportunity to develop their creative skills to the fullest extent possible. NYU School of Medicine: STEP High School Fellows Program

We are pleased to inform you that the STEP High School Fellows Program (STEP-HSFP) of the New York University School of Medicine (NYUSOM) is recruiting 11th graders who are members of historically underrepresented groups in scientific, technical, health-related, and licensed professions (African-American, Hispanic/Latino, and/or Native American Indian/Alaskan), and students who are economically disadvantaged to be participating Fellows in our after-school and summer enrichment program. NYUSOM’s unique STEP-HSFP utilizes innovative teaching methods and stimulating hands-on experiences to enhance the knowledge and skills of the students and to foster their interest in the pursuit of higher education in the sciences or in medicine. The Fellows will learn about varied
medical conditions and their causative biologic and physiologic mechanisms. They will discuss the socio-economic implications of illness, as well as pertinent health education and preventive strategies to combat those diseases.

The STEP-HSFP will comprise of three sessions which will run consecutively: spring, summer, and fall. All participants are required to commit for all three sessions. The program begins in February; participating students will meet at NYUSOM for an intensive 40-hour SAT prep and college workshop tentatively scheduled for Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 5-7pm, and two Saturdays. The summer program includes college prep sessions, the development of library and research skills, writing and presentation workshops, anatomy and statistics, and seminars on public health issues. The HS Fellows return next September for an 8-week program where they will have an assigned medical student mentor who will assist the participants with the college application process.

Girls Who Code: Summer Immersion Program

Girls Who Code (GWC) is now recruiting for its Summer Immersion Program! The Summer Immersion Program is an innovative program pairing over 250 hour of intensive instruction with engagement opportunities with the industry’s top players. The program is free of charge for all participants. GWC would like to partner with UA to involve as many of our students as possible in the Summer Immersion Program that:
 Uses project-based curriculum to teach computer science, including algorithms, loops, basic data
structures, Python, HTML, and JavaScript
 Cultivates crucial soft skills such as public speaking, leadership, and entrepreneurship
 Exposes students to successful female role models through guest speakers, field trips, workshops, and mentors

This program will take place in summer 2015, Monday through Friday from 9am-4pm for 7 weeks. The tentative dates are July 6, 2015 through August 16, 2015. Eligible applicants are:
 Current 10th and 11th grade girls interested in computer science and technology
 Prior computer science experience is not required
 Residents of the NYC area where the program is held
 Resilient
 Persistent
 Show commitment
 Accountable
 Reliable
 GPA is considered, but low GPA will not exclude students

Applications will open on January 12, 2015. The deadline to apply is February 13th. Students will be notified of their application outcomes by the end of March. Although the applications are not open yet, GWC would like to schedule information sessions with your school. GWC has the capacity to run information sessions in November, December and early January. These sessions could involve attending an assembly (especially at an all-girls school) or running a lunchtime information session for interested students. During these information sessions, GWC would like to have at least 15 minutes for a presentation, following by time for Q&A.

This has the potential to be a high impact program for UA students, and with 200 spots available in the program, should be a viable opportunity for a number of UA students to participate.
