BricArts Media: Dance Classes with Ronald K. Brown

In the summer of 2013, the incredible Ronald K. Brown/Evidence, A Dance Company, began a three-year residency at BRIC House. In addition to their annual fall performances, Ronald K. Brown and members of his company will be teaching a series of free dance community classes. These classes, which are accessible for all ages and skill levels, are rooted in the company’s fusion of traditional African dance with contemporary choreography. Groundswell: Summer Leadership Institute

Groundswell‟s flagship program, The Summer Leadership Institute (SLI), is a summer job training program for up to 100 youth. Seven teams of youth spend seven weeks working with professional artists and community-based organizations, learning job skills and creating public art for their neighborhoods. Additionally, participants are led, through the process of learning mural history, developing a design and painting a mural. 


Eligibility 

Teens & young adult ages 14-24 living in NYC. No artistic experience is necessary, but applicants should be interested in learning art skills & working as a team. Work activities include group discussions, art workshops and research. Much of the work is outdoors, physical, and messy! Students are expected to commit to entire seven week program. Students who have summer school or other commitments that prevent them from doing the required work hours are not eligible.

The Point: Child Acting Classes

Open Hydrant Theater at The Point is offering low-cost acting classes to children! This is a great opportunity to hone your acting craft or even try something new. Classes are only $10 each and are led by instructors from a professional theater company. Classes will build skills in confidence, self-esteem, reading scripts, cold readings and improv games. Classes started on March 22nd and will continue until June 7th from 12PM to 2PM. Introduction to CS and Cyber Security Summer Program for High School Women

Sponsored by the National Security Agency and the NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering.

This two-week, $300 stipend supported program provides a unique opportunity for young women from the NY metropolitan area. Qualified students will engage in an educational program covering the fundamental concepts of computer science and cybersecurity, leading to participation in the nationwide CSAW High School Cyber Forensics Challenge hosted annually by the NYU School of Engineering.

Twenty-two qualified young women from local high schools will be selected to engage in two weeks of day trips for lectures and hands-on training in New York City. The program will include significant hands-on lab exercises and students will be provided access to an online-accessible Virtual Lab (VITAL) to facilitate extracurricular and self-learning activity to prepare students to compete in CSAW. Students will also gain access to a mentor network of NYU alumni and affiliates for career and professional resources.

Big Brothers of Big Sisters of NYC: Mentoring Children of Promise Program Apply Now!


Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC (BBBS) has been changing the lives of New York City‟s at-risk youth through the power of mentoring since 1904. Our mission is to provide children facing adversity in NYC with strong and enduring, professional supported one-to-one mentoring relationships with adults that change their lives for the better. The Mentoring Children of Promise Program aims to help families by matching youth that have an incarcerated parent or family member with a fully screened and trained, volunteer mentor. Through this mentoring relationship youth are afforded the opportunity to learn resilience in the face of adversity, the importance of healthy relationships, as well as gain the support to grow to be successful young adults. This program will match youth of incarcerated parents/family members with a mentor, connect youth and their families with additional community

resources, and improve youths‟ behavior, academic performance, relationships, and self-confidence. Each young person will be expected to make a one-year commitment to participate in two weekend outings per month (3-4 hours each). Program eligibility requirements include:

 Youth must have a parent, sibling or family member currently incarcerated in a State or Federal Prison in the United States. If the incarcerated person is anyone other than the child‟s mother or father, he/she had to have been living in the same home as the child at the time of his/her arrest.


 If the incarcerated person is at Riker‟s Island or any other city jail, or has been deported, the youth is not eligible.


 All youth must be aware of his/her parent/family member's incarceration.


 Youth must be able to commit to actively participate in a mentoring relationship by meeting with his/her mentor on weekends for 3-4 hours, twice per month for one full year

Harlem Youth Court Paid Internship

The Harlem Youth Court is actively recruiting members for our upcoming 2014-2015 cohort. This program is a wonderful paid internship that will allow young people to contribute back to their community, help their peers, become college ready, and become exposed to the criminal justice system.

Youth court members:

Hear real-life cases for youths who have committed minor offenses
Serve their communities by helping other teens
Learn about the justice system, public speaking skills and how to be a leader
Build their resumes and college applications
Can earn community service hours for their participation
Can earn a stipend for active participation

In addition to serving on the youth court, Harlem Youth Court members participate in a wide range of group activities, such as field trips to local courthouses, fund-raising events, community service projects and social activities like bowling. Our youth court members are youth between the ages of 14-19 who live in New York City and have a deep passion for improving their communities. This year, our members represent four boroughs, but most of them come from the Harlem area. Our latest group was chosen from over 180 applicants. Amongst our current group of members we have talented writers, singers, dancers, aspiring lawyers, judges, and future leaders.


All Harlem Youth Court members first go through a two-month training program in which they learn about the justice system, how youth court works, and how to serve as judge, advocate, bailiff and jury. Most important, they learn how to work together as a team. Every youth who successfully completes the training program can become a full member of the Harlem Youth Court.
To apply, you must be 14-18 years old by September 1, 2014 and still in high school. If you are under 18 years old, you will need your parent or guardians permission to join. Trainings and youth court sessions are held at 170 E 121st Street, New York, NY 10035. The next training will take place during the summer. The dates have not yet been finalized.

Julliard Music Advancement Program

Julliard‟s Music Advancement Program (MAP) is a Saturday instrument instruction program for highly talented children from backgrounds underrepresented in American performing arts. For the past 20 years, MAP has served as an essential bridge to higher levels of musicianship, cultural participation, and personal growth for hundreds of young students. Eligible students must be between the ages of 8 and 14, reside in the tristate area (NY, NJ, CT), and have played their instrument for at least two years. African-American, Native American, and Latino students are especially encouraged to apply, as well as students who play the following instruments: Oboe, Bassoon, Flute, Clarinet, French Horn, Tuba, Trumpet, Trombone, Percussion, Viola, Double Bass. Beam Camp

Beam Camp is a 3.5-week summer program in New Hampshire where kids learn to make their ideas happen through fine and manual arts, technology and collaboration. Beam Campers cultivate hands-on skills while exploring innovative thinking, design, and the creative process. They build, swim, hike, play games, and enjoy 750 acres of mountain, forests and lakes. The camp is offering a limited number of full scholarships for girls ages 7-17 to its August session, which runs from July 30-August 24, 2014. The full cost of the session is $5,200. Tuition assistance available.

Brooklyn Cultural Adventures Program Teen Media Leadership Project

The Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) is pleased to announce this exciting new program for Brooklyn teens: The Brooklyn Cultural Adventures Program Teen Media Leadership Project (BCAPteen).  BCAPteen is a 6-week, full-day program for teens ages 13-17.  Teens will become experts on the six BCAP partner institutions, while learning skills in new media, communications, and leadership.  Our home base is BPL Central Library’s beautiful new Shelby White and Leon Levy Information Commons learning lab.  This is a competitive program – only 20 spots are available.
Who should apply?  Teens ages 13-17 with an interest in:
 Learning about topics like photo, film, journalism, and new media
 Exploring 6 awesome cultural institutions in the heart of Brooklyn
 Being a leader for kids, peers, and the community
 Setting goals for your future and achieving them

 Earning a stipend (for teens 14 and up)

NYU GSTEM

NYU GSTEM (Girls’ Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is a six-week program designed for young women in their junior year of high school. During this program, you will live at home and commute to New York University and internship sites throughout New York City! You will have an opportunity to work on a small project alongside researchers in the mathematical and physical sciences, produce a brief paper about your work, and deliver a short oral presentation to your peers. You will be supported by experienced STEM tutors who will be matched to your area of interest and provide guidance throughout the program. The program runs from July 7 through August 14, 2014. In partnership with Service in Schools, generationOn is now accepting applications for the goLEAD Institute on April 14-17, 2014. The goLEAD Institute is a youth leadership training program that engages selected high school students in leadership-building activities and service-learning projects. Students completing the goLEAD Institute will use the experience to help generationOn plan and lead service activities for 3rd-6th grade students during a youth leadership summit in May. GenerationOn is very excited to take the goLEAD program full circle to have older students mentor younger students in service, and are reaching out to educators across the city to recruit an amazing group of high school students.

Applications for the April 14-17 goLEAD Institute, including a letter of support, are due by Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at 5:00 pm. Students selected for the goLEAD Institute will be notified on or around April 7, 2014.

All Star Code is a non-profit initiative that prepares qualified minority boys for full-time employment in the technology industry by providing mentorship, industry exposure, and intensive training in computer science.  We are dedicated to closing the opportunity gap between young men of color and the tech industry.  We are seeking young men of color interested in technology and startups for its 2014 Summer Intensive.  The All Star Code Summer Intensive is a free, game changing six-week summer intensive that teachers computer science principles and interpersonal business skills.  Students will have an opportunity to:
·         Discover mobile apps, robotics, and game design
·         Master programming and computer science concepts
·         Practice communication, confidence, and collaboration
·         Network with professionals and peers
·         Play to your strengths and have fun

GenTech Spring Break Game Jam, April 12-13, 9am-8pm

Participate in the upcoming GenTech Spring Break Game Jam, put on by NYCEDC and the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) in partnership with TreSensa!

The event is a great opportunity for students to learn about professional game development and to build related technical skills and receive mentorship from industry insiders over the course of a single weekend.

With the support of volunteer mentors, each student team will create a mobile game that runs on the TreSensa Game Engine and a 3-min pitch presentation to showcase their work. At the end of the event, students will demo their games to judges from the tech community, and prizes will be awarded to the winning teams. We encourage all NYC high school students interested in learning about creating mobile games to attend - no prior experience necessary! We are looking for students with and without a coding background as well as students with experience in image editing.  Also, students who attend the game jam will have priority access to this summer's GenTech program, www.nycgenerationtech.com (Priority deadline: April 4th; Regular deadline: May 2nd).

American Museum of Natural History Exploratory Courses

Our Concrete Jungle focuses on urban biodiversity, and just how many things live here in NYC! It will also look at some of the current conservation issues faced by cities.

Digging Up Our Past gives students a look into what archaeologists really do, and will focus on the archaeology of NYC. Students will learn about the techniques archaeologists use and do hands on projects!

Footprints in Time explores how paleontologists use fossil evidence to infer how extinct creatures lived their daily lives. Students will learn more about how we discover what dinosaur behavior was like!

Smithsonian Latino Center: 2014 Young Ambassadors Program

The Smithsonian Latino Center is the division of the Smithsonian Institution which ensures that Latino contributions to art, science, and the humanities are highlighted, understood, and advanced. It does that through the development and support of public programs, scholarly research, museum collections, and educational opportunities at the Smithsonian and its affiliated organizations. The center is now accepting applications for its 2014 Young Ambassadors Program, which aims to foster the next generation of Latino leaders in the arts, sciences, and humanities.  Graduating high school seniors selected to participate in the program, which runs from June 22 through August 1, 2014 will travel to Washington, D.C. for a weeklong seminar at the Smithsonian. The week consists of visits to the Smithsonian‟s Latino collections and one-on-one interaction with renowned experts from various fields. Following the week in Washington, students participate in a four-week interdisciplinary internship in museums and cultural institutions in 17 cities across the United States and Puerto Rico, including Smithsonian-affiliated organizations. Student selection is based on demonstrated interest, commitment, and excellence in the arts, sciences, and humanities, as well as academic record, leadership experience, and dedication to education and community service. The program includes meals and accommodations for the duration of the one-week training seminar, round-trip travel to Washington D.C., and a program stipend following the four-week internship. West Point Summer Leaders Experience

The United States Military Academy at West Point Summer Leaders Experience (SLE) gives high school juniors a week to experience life as a cadet to inform their college selection decision. SLE is a fast-paced program of academic classes, military training, physical fitness training and intramural athletics conducted during the month of June each year. There will be two week-long SLE sessions this upcoming June. Session 1 will take place from June 7-13, 2014, and Session 2 will take place from June 14,-20, 2014. SLE is highly competitive – there are normally 6,000 applicants and 1,000 attendees. The cost to attend SLE is $400. The deadline to apply is April 11th. Volunteer at the NYCDOE SEP Hackathon (at UAG!) 4/26/13

The Dept of Education’s Software Engineering Pilot (SEP) program is gearing up for its first student hackathon for 6th and 9th graders on April 26 from 10am to 6pm. The hackathon will take place simultaneously in two locations—Queens Vocational & Technical High School and Urban Assembly Gateway School for Technology.   The all-day event is expected to draw in 200 students from all five boroughs. The theme of the hackathon, is "Hello Small World." It encourages students to contemplate the role of technology in their lives, exploring how it brings spaces, places, and people closer together. Students will be using Scratch to create their programs. Women’s Debate Institute

The Women’s Debate Institute (WDI) is a tuition-free camp that provides young women the opportunity to be a part of a strong community of women who love debate. At the WDI, high school girls have the opportunity to learn policy and Lincoln-Douglas debate skills from some of the top female debaters in the country. Working one-on-one with former NDT and CEDA winners gives girls the competitive edge they need to be successful debaters. The WDI also teaches students what it means to be a woman in debate and exposes girls to the rich community of women in this activity. Furthermore, our “College Seminar” gives each student the opportunity to learn how to make higher education a reality, regardless of their current situation. High School Student Essay Contest on Democracy and Citizenship

High school students have the opportunity to intern for one week with a Justice of the Supreme Court and earn a $100 gift card. Interested 10th, 11th and 12th grade students should write a 500-word essay on the law theme for 2014 “American Democracy and the Rule of Law: Why Every Vote Matters” and discuss the importance of a citizen‟s right to vote and the challenges we still face in ensuring that all Americans have the opportunity to participate in our democracy. One essay will be published in the New York Law Journal. Schools are encouraged to evaluate essays. Up to five entries will be accepted from each school. Bella Abzug Leadership Institute: Summer Leadership and Debate Program

Our free 12-day leadership and debate training program includes workshops in debate techniques, public speaking, critical thinking, policy research, writing speeches, articles, and developing the skills to analyze contemporary public policy issues. Highly accomplished female professionals, who work in the top echelons of corporate, business, government, and not for profit sectors as well as women business owners, elected officials and diplomats, come as guest lecturers and also conduct workshops. The Bella Abzug Leadership Institute (BALI) has developed a closer partnership with the New York City Urban Debate League (NYCUDL), the organization that represents competitive debate teams from public high schools throughout NYC. Together with the coaches of the NYCUDL, our students take a four-hour lab on policy and public forum debate which results in actual debate competitions at the end of each week of the 12-Day Leadership and Debate Training. 2014 Summer Internship Program : Legal Bound

The New York County District Attorney’s Legal Bound High School Summer Internship Program is a rigorous six-week internship that provides students with an insider’s view of the criminal justice system and law enforcement in New York County. This internship is open to rising juniors and seniors in high school who reside in Manhattan. Our interns attend a variety of public, private and parochial schools representing the diverse communities of the borough.

Interns are assigned to various units within the office and assist attorneys and support staff with projects and other responsibilities. New York Historical Society: Student Historian Internship Program

The New York Historical Society is now accepting applications for the Student Historian Internship Program. This internship program is designed for students in grades 10, 11, and 12 in the tri-state area. The Student Historian Internship Program is a comprehensive internship and youth development program that provides students with vocational and academic training, public speaking and leadership skills, and an increased understanding of American art and history. Through object- and inquiry-based learning, students broaden their academic perspective, increase their confidence in professional settings, and enhance their knowledge of fulfilling careers in the museum world. The program runs from July 8-August 14, 2014, Tuesdays-Thursdays from 10am-4pm. Please note that applicants must be available and commit to attending every day of the program. This program is open to students who meet ALL of the following qualifications:

YouthAction NYC and Citizens’ Committee for Children would like to invite the youth in your program to participate in our 2014 YouthAction Youth Forum. Our annual forum is planned and facilitated entire BY YOUTH FOR YOUTH, as we feel there is great and untapped opportunity for young people to learn from each other. This event will give participants a safe space to engage in dialogue about the challenges of youth employment in a difficult economy and help them take the steps necessary for a successful job and/or career search. Futures and Options: Core Internship Program

Students in the Futures and Options Core Internship Program participate in paid internships at New York City businesses, non-profits, and government organizations. The interns work 12-15 hours per week after school or up to 40 hours per week during the summer. Additionally, interns receive ongoing support from Futures and Options staff and attend monthly work-readiness workshops and career exploration field trips. The program is open to students in 11th and 12th grade. The Core Internship Program operates on a rolling basis, and students can apply now to be considered for both spring and summer opportunities. Healthy Relationship Training Academy: Junior Peer Educator

The Healthy Relationship Training Academy, which is a program of the Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence (OCDV), offers a series of free workshops to NYC youth on topics of dating violence and healthy relationships. All of our workshops are facilitated by Junior Peer Educators. We are looking for passionate and dynamic young professionals to join our Peer Educator team. Junior Peer Educators will join a dynamic team of young people in teaching New Yorkers about dating violence and healthy relationships among teens and young adults. Some of the program topics include recognizing abusive behaviors, components of a healthy relationship, communication skills,
why people stay in abusive relationships, ending a relationship safely, the impact of technology on relationships, and how to help a friend. This is an excellent position for someone who is passionate about educating their peers, eager to improve their presentation skills, proactive about being involved in an outstanding program, and excited about working in diverse communities in NYC. The necessary skills interested students should have include:
 Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in written correspondence
 Highly organized
 Outstanding time management skills
 Ability to adapt on the spot in challenging situations
 Willingness to give and receive feedback
 Interest in working with a variety of audiences

Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum: Leadership Institute for Today and Tomorrow

The Intrepid Museum’s Leadership Institute for Today and Tomorrow (LIFTT) is a school year-long program for 11th grade students which focuses on the development of the following academic and personal competencies: work habits and organizational skills; persistence; engagement; communication and collaboration. Expanded Horizons College Prep is currently recruiting for Henry Street University (HSU) our six-week summer experience for rising seniors which runs from July 7 - August 14, 2013. It is designed to prepare the Class of 2015 for the college application process! The full program details are below.

Google Science Fair

The Google Science Fair is a global online science and technology competition open to youth ages 13 to 18. Entrants must come up with a question to investigate and carry out an experiment, or test out a solution to a problem. Projects are judged on the criteria of inspirational entry or idea, capacity to make an impact, passion for science or engineering, excellence of method, and communication skills. The grand prize includes a 10-day trip to the Galapagos Islands with National Geographic Expeditions, an experience at the Virgin Galactic Spaceport, and $50,000 in scholarship funding. 2014 SUSTAINABLE DIRECTIONS SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Urban Assembly-Triskeles Sustainable Directions Summer Internship Program provides internships in a variety of progressive businesses and non-profit organizations that are committed to sustainability and social entrepreneurship. We screen students to determine their areas of interest, professional aspiration and preferred work location. We train them and prepare them for interviews and the internship experiences and then match them with the perfect opportunity. THE POINT partners with Urban Word NYC to deliver weekly literary arts education through poetry and spoken word. Founded on the belief that teenagers can and must speak for themselves, Urban Word NYC™ (UW) has been at the forefront of the youth spoken word, poetry and hip-hop movements in New York City since 1999.


The purpose of this workshop series is to prepare high school students for not only college courses, but for college life itself. Students will be challenged to take their writing skills to the next level while establishing a deep connection to the power of their own voice. As a group, we will dissect the works of visionary writers who have inspired social change while writing our own stories into existence. We will also discuss the ins and outs of everyday college life. Students will receive knowledge from lessons that often take many their entire college career to learn. Sing for Hope Youth Chorus

The Sing for Hope Youth Chorus strives to ignite a love of singing, foster a safe community for self-expression, and encourage chorus members to reach their full potential for artistic and personal excellence.

New York City high school students from all five boroughs are encouraged to audition. No prior music experience is necessary, and membership is free. Those accepted to participate in the Sing for Hope Youth Chorus receive vocal training while developing performance and sight-singing skills. Chorus members have the opportunity to learn from talented members of Sing for Hope’s Volunteer Artist Roster and perform throughout New York City. Rehearsals are held in Midtown Manhattan twice a week, after school.


Audition Procedures


Students will perform simple pitch-matching exercises and sing a song of their choice a cappella. Auditions take place throughout the year by appointment . Urban Word: Winter Word Workshops February 4th-March 19th 
This winter the Urban Word is offering unique word workshops focused on monologue development, music and poetry. The two being offered are People on the Train & Lyrical Melodies. People on the Train is offered by Katie Issel Pitre on Tuesdays February 4th- March 18th from 4:30pm-6:30pm. The course focuses on character voice and how it works on stage and in your writing. Through developing dramatic monologues, ―People on the Train‖ will workshop aspects of writing and performance centered around presence, narrative and ―voice‖. A great workshop that will help develop presence, and narrative for page and stage. Lyrical Melodies is a combination of Spoken Word & Music and is offered by Shanelle Gabriel on Wednesday from February 5th – March 19th at 4:30-6:30pm. Here you will learn the finesse in order to effectively blend genres (song, rap and poetry) and. It focuses on developing techniques to improve both vocal and written abilities then learning how to find the best ways to merge them within new bodies of work. The Stella Adler Studio of Acting: Summer Shakespeare 
Deadline: Apply: May 19th to May 23rd
Summer Shakespeare is a five-week summer intensive (July 7 – August 8, 2014) . Twenty-four students are selected to train five days a week in voice, movement and scene study (50 hours of classes total). The program culminates with a production of an abbreviated Shakespeare play. Summer Shakespeare is an intensive program that requires the quick understanding and execution of new skills. Eligibility criteria include the following:

 Applicants must be enrolled in a New York City high school

 Applicants must demonstrate financial need (priority consideration for students who receive free lunch or reduced lunch)

 Applicants must demonstrate a need for arts exposure (priority consideration for students who do not have access to arts programming)

 Applicants must follow application instructions (in particular, bringing a monologue from a published play keeps a student qualified; bringing a monologue from the internet or YouTube disqualifies students)

Please note that this program adheres to a strict attendance policy and professional standards. All students must be on time and ready to participate in all classes. Van Cortlandt Park Conservancy: Green Jobs for Youth

The Van Cortlandt Park Conservancy‟s Green Jobs for Youth program is a 7-week program that offers youth a chance to work outdoors with park experts.  Students will earn free college credit and an hourly wage.  CUNY Lehman College‟s Science & Technology Entry Program (STEP) offers lectures and lab activities from its esteemed Earth, Environmental and Geospatial Sciences Department.  Students will also have the opportunity to work as apprentices with the Conservancy‟s horticulturists and forest restoration staff, and complete labs, fieldwork and

The Noguchi Museum: Making Your Mark

Come explore, experiment, create and share during the Making Your Mark (MYM) program held at the The Noguchi Museum.  MYM is a free summer program that introduces teens (10th
to 12thgraders) to the art and vision of sculptor Isamu Noguchi and provides a supportive environment where participants can identify and pursue their own creative interests.  The core activities of MYM include looking at and discussing art at The Noguchi Museum; 
learning about techniques including carving and casting and how to work with non-traditional sculptural materials such as found objects; and spending substantial time making your own art.  Experiences in the Museum's galleries and studio space are deepened through group reflection and trips to other museums and galleries. The program culminates in an end-of-summer exhibition and reception to which families and friends are invited.  Applications are due June 2nd and include a mandatory letter of recommendation from a teacher, advisor or mentor.

Children's Museum of Manhattan: Summer Junior Staff Internship

High school students from all over New York City work together alongside museum staff to explore community, technology and education at the Children‟s Museum of Manhattan (CMOM).  Through experiences that increase their confidence and independence, Junior Staff Interns grow into valued members of the CMOM team.  Interns begin with broad interests in technology, the arts or working with children. Each intern develops their interests into real work experience and skill sets that prepare them for college and careers. Students start off as volunteers, and 
as they gain more experience, they earn an ascending stipend.  The Summer Session runs on selected weekdays from 10am- 3pm and Fridays from 11am-4 pm. 
Qualifications and Important Information: 
As a high school intern you will be an active part of our education team, assisting tours and camp groups, learning life skills, building new experiences and developing leadership skills. 
 You must be able to commit to all days and times of the program session.

A Young Mother‟s D.R.E.A.M. 
Rolling
A Young Mother‟s D.R.E.A.M. is a year-long mentoring program that supports young mothers, ages 16-23, in completing their education. These young mothers are matched with mentors who themselves had a child before age 23 and before finishing higher education, and who have since completed a 4-year degree. The pairs meet monthly for workshops that promote healthy choices, goal setting, and education among the mentees. The program welcomes both mentor and mentee applications on a rolling basis. 



United States Naval Academy Summer Programs

Did you know that the United States Naval Academy invites over 3,000 students per year to participate in our summer programs? These programs offer your students a chance to visit Annapolis and experience the Naval Academy first-hand. Our Summer STEM program is designed for rising 8th-11th graders who are interested in pursuing education in the science, technology, engineering and math fields. During the STEM program, students will be exposed to world-class lab facilities and have the opportunity to learn from some of the best college professors in the country. In addition, they will meet fellow students from all over the country that share a similar passion for learning. The Summer STEM session dates are as follows: 
 Rising 8th and 9th graders: June 2-7, 2014 
 Rising 10th graders: June 9-14, 2014 
 Rising 11th graders: June 16-20, 2014 
Tuition for the Summer STEM Program is $350. The deadline to apply is April 15th. 
The Summer Seminar Program, designed for rising 12th graders, gives students the opportunity to find out if they have what it takes to be midshipmen. The program allows students to experience the rigorous academics, physical challenges and student life at the Naval Academy. Summer Seminar is perfect for students who have no prior exposure to a service academy as well as those who are trying to decide if a service academy is right for them. The Summer Seminar Program dates are as follows:

City Parks Foundation: Green Teens

The Green Teen Program is a New York City Parks & Recreation anti-litter initiative to engage young people to become stewards of their parklands and recreation centers. The program enrolls Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) participants, Recreation Center youth members, and teen volunteers through the NYC Service website. Through the program, the teens learn how they can make a ―green‖ positive impact in their local neighborhood parks and recreation centers by removing litter, collecting recyclables, watering trees, attending sustainability workshops and most importantly encouraging the public not to litter. Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program

Eligibility RequirementsHigh school students who have completed at least Grade 9. A graduating senior is eligible to apply
Must be 16 years of age for most laboratories. Some laboratories may accept a 15 year old applicant. Please check individual lab description for more details.
Applicants must be US citizens and participation by Permanent Resident Aliens is limited. Please check individual lab descriptions for participation of Permanent Resident Aliens.
Dual citizens may be accepted at some labs, but not all. Interested students should contact the individual labs to determine if dual citizens may apply.
Award Duration and StipendParticipating students spend 8 weeks during the summer doing research. Program dates are fixed and cannot be changed. Students are expected to participate 8 continuous weeks. No vacation time is allowed during these eight weeks.
It is strongly recommended to apply to laboratories that are close to your residence. No travel/relocation allowance will be provided.
The stipend amount for students will be $3,300 for the 8 weeks, which will be paid in three installments. Returning students will receive $3,800 for the 8 weeks. The first check two checks will be distributed during the internship and the third check will be distributed at the end of the internship.

Have a story to tell? How about expressing your thoughts through a movie, song or animation of your own creation? RECYouth is a multimedia extracurricular program where you’ll learn video and audio production, photography, and graphic design while encouraging your creative expression. Learn to use digital tools and professional software to create and edit footage, recordings and photos. By the end of the course, you will have independently or collaboratively completed a final project and will have the opportunity to showcase your digital creations at a community screening or exhibit. Dream Catchers Afterschool Workshops

“Dream Catchers” is a series of 14 week workshops, led by Cheryl Paley and Ruthie Azarch. For the past 23 years Ms. Paley has directed theatre for social change and created and facilitated workshops for young people, using the arts as a prevention tool. Ruthie Azarch is a visual artist who has created workshops and businesses around utilizing art as a transformational tool. Groups of 10 – 15 young people between the ages of 13 and 21 will meet and engage in journal writing, poetry and drama workshops, visual arts, improvisation and a host of arts-based techniques as a springboard for personal growth and exploration and a forum for group discussion on issues relevant to their daily lives. At the end of each 14 week session, participants will create and present their own final project for an invited audience. The boys group will meet on Mondays from 4 – 6pm and the girls group will meet on Wednesdays from 4:30 – 6:30. UpBeat offers an orchestra program for children 8 through 21 years of age. Students enrolled in the orchestra program receive instruction on a string, woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument three or more days per week. Classes include private lessons, group lessons, and ensemble rehearsals. Eligible students will reside in the South Bronx, typically in the Mott Haven section, and will be able to make a commitment to attending at least 3 days of classes per week after school. New York Public Library: Innovation Labs Apply Now!
Innovation Labs (IL), a new program of the New York Public Library (NYPL), is an interdisciplinary program about critical engagement with the world around us. Using blogging, podcasti0ng, and video game design, participants will observe, investigate, and assess issues pertaining to the spaces and situations with which they interact every day. Participants will hone their research, analysis, and presentation skills as they refine the critical thinking that is essential to the Common Core Standards. They will become producers of informational media rather than consumers, and be able to express their opinions about and solutions to issues that matter to them.

Program Details:
 Located at 3 sites: Columbus Library (10th Ave. and 50th Street); St. George Library (by the Staten Island Ferry Terminal in Staten Island); Bronx Library Center (Fordham Section of the Bronx)
 Each site will host two cohorts of up to 25 students. One cohort will attend the program on Mondays and Wednesdays; the other on Tuesdays and Thursdays; Fridays are open days for trips, special projects, and guest speakers
 Enrollment is open to students in grades 7 through 10
 Enrollment is ongoing until the 25 slots per cohort are filled
 Each program meeting lasts from 3:30-6:00pm
 Program sessions will include time for students to complete their school homework, as well as completion of IL work

We will be assessing student mastery of our learning technologies and communication platforms through a series of digital badges, which are awarded after successful completion of a task or assignment. Think of digital badging as similar to acquiring a Girl Scout or Boy Scout badge, except they exist in the digital realm. Mozilla Backpack is the platform that we will use to track badging. Badges will be awarded for skills like writing a coherent blog post and sharing it with three other individuals (hard skills) but also for being able to collaborate i0n a group, provide constructive feedback on another’s work, overall attendance and participation, and other “soft” skills. New York City Housing Authority Digital Vans Ongoing
New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) offers Digital Vans – free computer labs on wheels for NYCHA residents and other community members to link up to the Internet, search for job opportunities, or touch up resumes. The vans travel around the city, stopping in areas that have limited or no access to broadband high-speed internet service. Its eight laptop computers have wireless Internet access and connect to printers. WiFi also allows people with their own laptops to be outside the van and access the Internet for free.
