Annual Citywide Graphics Arts Competition
First Submission Deadline: 3/28

The Graphics Industry Advisory Commission today announced the launch of the thirteenth Annual Citywide Graphic Arts Competition that runs from now until the Finals on May 23. Graphic communications students in every borough will be submitting their entries in a Qualifying Round in March hoping to get into the citywide contest at CUNY’s CityTech in Brooklyn.

Six categories of graphic design and production highlight the students’ achievement: Desktop Publishing & Design, Digital Video Production, Web Site Design, Digital Photography, Package Design and Student Filmmaking. Finalists in each category will have four hours to produce new work in the CityTech labs on the day of the competition. Judged by college professors and industry practitioners, the winners will get trophies, prizes, software, equipment and other graphics-related materials provided by leading industry firms.

We have a ton of opportunities for you to explore future careers this spring! The programs listed below offer your students unique and hands on insight into an industry of their interest. Have interested students email the appropriate Executive to reserve their spot. Also, please note the Exploring Membership fee has increased to 24.00 per student per year. This allows a student to participate in as many programs as they like for a year. Many schools have elected to pay for their student’s membership fee.





Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program 
Deadline: March 6
Girls Who Code is currently recruiting for its Summer Immersion Program. The Summer Immersion Program is an innovative program pairing over 250 hours of intensive instruction with engagement opportunities with the industry’s top players. The Summer Immersion Program: 
 Uses project-based curriculum to teach computer science, including algorithms, loops, basic data 
structures, Python, HTML and JavaScript 
 Cultivates crucial soft skills such as public speaking, leadership and entrepreneurship 
 Exposes students to successful female role models through guest speakers, field trips, workshops, and mentors 
This program will take place throughout Summer 2014, Monday-Friday from 9am-4pm for 7 weeks. Exact dates will be announced shortly. Eligible applicants are: 
 Current 10th and 11th grade girls interested in computer science and technology 
 Prior computer science experience not required 
 Residents of the NYC area where the program is held

Columbia University Engineering Exploration Experience

Registration Deadline: March 7th; Event Date: March 29, 2014
Columbia University’s Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is inviting all female students in grades 9 through 11 to register to attend the Engineering Exporation Experience (EEE). The event consists of three round robin workshops in the morning where the students will receive the opportunity to work with graduate students and professors in wet labs and bond with female engineering students. In the afternoon, the students will participate in a catapult competition. The engineering design challenge will be followed by a college application workshop where students will have the opportunity to get their questions answered by Columbia Admissions Officers. The objective of the event is to expose high school students to the exciting career opportunities offered by al branches of engineering, both in academia and in industry. This event will allow the high school students to learn from a diverse set of women – from undergraduate students to professors to industry professionals – and see the integral roles that women engineers fill in our world today. This event will take place on March 29, 2014 from 9:30am-4:30pm at the Columbia University campus. Registration is required; the deadline to register is March 1st. Girl Scout Leadership Institute NYC

The Girl Scout Leadership Institute NYC (GSLI-NYC), run in partnership with the Athena Center for Leadership Studies at Barnard College, is a 15-month leadership development program in STEM or entrepreneurship for girls entering grades 9-12 in the fall of 2014. GSLI-NYC allows girls to develop content knowledge/skills, gain exposure to women leaders within the workplace, explore careers, create and pitch a business idea, compete for internships and travel opportunities, undertake a major community service project, and deepen self-confidence. Girls selected for the program participate i0n a Summer STEM or Entrepreneurship Intensive Session, during which they learn valuable skills and design and pitch their own business plans to STEM or entrepreneurial experts. During the School Year Program, girls participate in leadership coaching circles, career days, leadership development workshops, and leadership in practice opportunities. Mt. Sinai 2nd Annual Brain Awareness Fair

On Thursday, March 13th, CEYE along with the Sinai Neuroscience Outreach Program will be holding our second annual Brain Awareness Fair! This is event where all ages to join us to explore the Brain with an assortment of different interactive activity booths along with different foundations such a Brain Injury, etc. Students will receive a “passport” to be stamped as they go from from booth to booth and receive a door prize at the end of the session.  Annenberg West Lobby, Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Camp G.O.A.L.S. on the Intrepid

Intrepid Camp GOALS for Girls

Intrepid’s Camp GOALS (Greater Opportunities Advancing Leadership and Science) for Girls is an application based, free six-week summer camp for current 8th and 9th grade girls from NYC schools. This is not your average summer camp. Through dynamic hands-on activities, field studies, and workshops, 50 accepted students will build proficiency in the fields of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM). Ideal students are:
 Female students, currently in the 8th or 9th grade, who reside and attend school in NYC
 Students who attend NYC Title I public schools are highly encouraged to apply and are given priority of assessment
 Have a strong interest in math and science, and an interest in learning more about STEM
 Enjoy working in teams and are open-minded to new people and new experiences
 Are able to commit to the full 6-weeks of summer fun and learning
The camp runs from July 7 through August 15, 2014, from 9:00am-3:00pm and is located at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, located at West 46th Street and 12th Avenue. Each camper who is selected will be given a combination of unlimited monthly and weekly Metrocards to be used during camp dates only. Participants will also be provided with free, healthy lunches during on-ship activities and workshops. Lunches will not be provided on field trip days. Applications are due by March 14th; applicants will be notified by March 27th if they have been selected for an interview. Manhattan-Staten Island Area Health Education Center: Summer Health
Internship Program

The Manhattan-Staten Island Area Health Education Center (MSI AHEC) Summer Health Internship Program (SHIP) is an intensive, six-week opportunity for high school and college students. This program exposes students to a variety of careers in the health fields as well as to health issues affecting their communities. SHIP allows participants to interact regularly with health care professionals. Students who successfully complete the MSI AHEC SHIP will emerge with new connections, job readiness skills, and insight into the world of health care.

 Mandatory Program Orientation: July 1-3

 Program Dates: July 7-August 14, Monday-Thursday 9am-4pm

 Criteria for Participation

o High School Students entering as a Junior or Senior OR

o College Students entering as a Freshman or Sophomore in Fall 2014

o Student must be between 16-22 years of age at start of program

o Student must attend school and/or live in Manhattan or Staten Island

o Student must be a United States Citizen or have Permanent Resident Status

o Student must be interested in a career in the health field

Application Instructions: The 2014 Application Deadline is March 14 (See link to application). Applications must be submitted online (or mail-in option), and recommendation forms must be postmarked by March 14. Trip of a Lifetime: Summer Travel Scholarships

Trip of a Lifetime is a student-run 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that uses summer travel experiences to unlock the true potential in underprivileged students, enabling them to become the leaders of tomorrow. Since its inception, the organization has raised over $250,000 and has sent thirty-two students on trips. High schools are invited to nominate up to five students in grades 9-11 to receive a summer travel scholarship through Trip of a Lifetime. Students should be in good academic standing, qualify for financial need, and demonstrate a passion for making a difference. Applications are due by March 15th. Urban Word NYC: Winter Word Workshops 
Rolling from February 4th to March 19th
Urban Word NYC champions the voices of New York City youth by providing platforms for critical literacy, youth development and leadership through free and uncensored writing, college prep and performance opportunities. Urban Word presents literary arts education and youth programs in the areas of creative writing, spoken word, college prep, literature and hip-hop. We provide FREE, safe and uncensored writing workshops to teens year round. Our host of programs and artistic development opportunities expose more than 25,000 NYC teens to the art of spoken word poetry. Through our Creatively College Bound Program and partnership with the NY Knicks we award over $1,000,000 in scholarships to prestigious colleges and universities each year. We also host a vigorous community educator and teacher training series, Preemptive Education, which links inquiry-based classroom
practices with the most progressive academic trends in student-centered pedagogy. Winter Word Workshops is only one of our many programs which focuses on character voice, singing, rap and poetry. The two sessions are as follows:
 People on the Train

When: Tuesdays February 4th- March 18th 4:30pm-6:30pm
 Description: Persona. What is it? This workshop focuses on character voice and how it works on stage and in your writing. Through developing dramatic monologues, “People on the Train” will workshop aspects of writing and performance centered around presence, narrative and “voice”. A great workshop that will help develop presence, and narrative for page and stage.
Lyrical Melodies 
(Combining Spoken Word & Music)
Led by: Shanelle Gabriel
When: Wednesday, February 5th – March 19th 4:30-6:30pm
 Description: So you can sing, rap AND you can spit poetry??? Who told you that you had to choose one? It takes a bit of finesse to effectively blend genres and this workshop (taught by singer/ poet/ lyricist Shanelle Gabriel) will show you how. It focuses on developing techniques to improve both vocal and written abilities then learning how to find the best ways to merge them within new bodies of work.

24th Annual Latino College Expo on March 15, 2014
NYU Kimmel Center in New York, NY. Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors affiliated with program agencies, high schools, and community-based organizations are invited to participate in this day-long event.

Intrepid Museum GOALS Mentorship Day

On Saturday, March 29th the Intrepid Museum will be hosting the GOALS Mentorship Day. This day is open to GOALS alum and teenage girls interested in pursuing a career in science, technology, engineering, art and/or math. Hear from influential women of various science backgrounds, complete hands-on challenges and games, make connections with your peers and women in academia and the professional sector, and learn how to pursue your dream occupation while nurturing other talents.

This event is for teenage girls between the ages of 14-17.

Kids Creative Apprenticeship Program

Kids Creative is looking for high school juniors and seniors with a passion for the arts, an aspiration to promote peace, interest in youth development, and a desire to learn to take part in our Apprentice Program. Apprentices will receive training and first-hand experience in using Kids Creative’s methods of community building through collaborative creation as well as highly valuable job skills. Qualified apprentices will be eligible for an opportunity to
work as a paid intern at our summer camp. Interested students must meet the following requirements:
 Be at least 16 years of age by July 2014
 Have experience with supervising children & enjoy working with them
 Have interest and experience in one or more forms of art and a love for the creative arts overall
 Be responsible and self-motivated
 Display all of the qualities that we seek to instill within our students, such as confidence, creativity, and an
ability to resolve conflicts peacefully and a love for art  Be confident expressing themselves creatively in front of children and can inspire children with their
constant creativity
 Be excellent team players
 Know how to be silly, have fun with children, and not take themselves too seriously
 Able to complete the 10-week program

Heckscher Foundation for Children Summer Scholars Program

The Heckscher Foundation for Children Summer Scholars Program is a multi-year and multi-layered program geared toward academic and professional skill building to position students for college success.  In the first year, students receive intensive tutoring and college guidance by participating in a 5-week summer academic program and skill building in Math, English, foreign language, and career development.  Academic enrichment and college guidance continues through their graduation from high school, with additional support services available in college.
In the second summer, students will be placed in an internship or pre-college program.
Target Students:
 Ideal not only for students who are a school’s top academic performers, but also for those who are highly motivated and on the cusp of high achievement (B/B+ GPA).  Because academic tutoring is the foundation of the program, Heckscher is not looking to serve students who are bound to “get into top colleges and succeed anyway.”  They will select good students with whom they can work to “unlock their hidden potential.”
 Current 10th graders (rising 11th graders) ONLY
 Able and dedicated to making a 2-year commitment (junior and senior year) to the program (summers and 1 weekend day/evening each week during the academic year)
 Heckscher will admit 12 Urban Assembly students this year

NYU Science and Technology Entry Program 
Deadline: March 28th
The Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) at New York University (NYU) is an innovative pre-college enrichment program for talented middle and high school students in New York City. Our goal is to encourage and increase the presence of historically underrepresented groups in science, technology, engineering, math (STEM careers) and licensed professions. To be eligible for STEP, you must:
 Be a high school or middle school student in grades 7-12
 Have an 80 average in Math, Science and English
 Have an 80 cumulative average
 Be a resident of New York State
 Identify as African American, Latino, Native American, and Alaskan American, or meet state-determined economic criteria.
The deadline to apply for the summer program is March 28th. (The deadline for continuing students is March 14th.)

Brownsville Youth Court 
Deadline: March 30th
The Brownsville Youth Court is recruiting new members for its next cohort. The Brownsville Youth Court trains teenagers ages 14-18 to serve as advocates, jurors and judges. Members hear real-life cases of other teens that have committed low-level offenses. The goal of Youth Court does not assess guilt or innocence; but through use of positive peer pressure, helps ensure that young people who have committed minor offenses pay back the community and receive help they need to avoid further involvement in the justice system. The application to be a member of the Brownsville Youth Court is due on March 30th. Harlem Youth Court Paid Internship
Deadline: Mar 31
The Harlem Youth Court is actively recruiting members for our upcoming 2014-2015 cohort. This program is a wonderful paid internship that will allow young people to contribute back to their community, help their peers, become college ready, and become exposed to the criminal justice system.

Youth court members:
Hear real-life cases for youths who have committed minor offenses
Serve their communities by helping other teens
Learn about the justice system, public speaking skills and how to be a leader
Build their resumes and college applications
Can earn community service hours for their participation
Can earn a stipend for active participation

In addition to serving on the youth court, Harlem Youth Court members participate in a wide range of group activities, such as field trips to local courthouses, fund-raising events, community service projects and social activities like bowling. Our youth court members are youth between the ages of 14-19 who live in New York City and have a deep passion for improving their communities. This year, our members represent four boroughs, but most of them come from the Harlem area. Our latest group was chosen from over 180 applicants. Amongst our current group of members we have talented writers, singers, dancers, aspiring lawyers, judges, and future leaders.

All Harlem Youth Court members first go through a two-month training program in which they learn about the justice system, how youth court works, and how to serve as judge, advocate, bailiff and jury. Most important, they learn how to work together as a team. Every youth who successfully completes the training program can become a full member of the Harlem Youth Court.
To apply, you must be 14-18 years old by September 1, 2014 and still in high school. If you are under 18 years old, you will need your parent or guardians permission to join. Trainings and youth court sessions are held at 170 E 121st Street, New York, NY 10035. The next training will take place during the summer. The dates have not yet been finalized.

Brooklyn Cultural Adventures Program Teen Media Leadership Project
Deadline: April 1st
The Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) is pleased to announce this exciting new program for Brooklyn teens: The Brooklyn Cultural Adventures Program Teen Media Leadership Project (BCAPteen).  BCAPteen is a 6-week, full-day program for teens ages 13-17.  Teens will become experts on the six BCAP partner institutions, while learning skills in new media, communications, and leadership.  Our home base is BPL Central Library’s beautiful new Shelby White and Leon Levy Information Commons learning lab.  This is a competitive program – only 20 spots are available.
Who should apply?  Teens ages 13-17 with an interest in:
 Learning about topics like photo, film, journalism, and new media
 Exploring 6 awesome cultural institutions in the heart of Brooklyn
 Being a leader for kids, peers, and the community
 Setting goals for your future and achieving them
 Being creative, having fun, and meeting teens from across the city
 Committing to doing this for 6 weeks, Monday-Friday, 9:00am-3:30pm
 Earning a stipend (for teens 14 and up)
Students 14 and up will receive a stipend of $300, contingent on excellent attendance.  Participants age 13 may participate at no cost, but are not eligible to receive the stipend.  This program runs from June 30-August 8, 2014 and includes an orientation on June 14, 2014 and a reunion/video release party on November 15, 2014. Interested students must submit an application by no later than April 1st

The Summer Arts Institute Application Period: December 16th - February 14th
The Summer Arts Institute is a tuition-free, intensive, arts program for New York City public school students entering grades 8-12, held at Frank Sinatra School of the Arts High School in Astoria, Queens. The program is designed for students at an intermediate or advanced level of study in their chosen discipline. Summer Arts Institute offers a unique opportunity for students to work with Department of Education arts specialists, partnering cultural organizations, and guest artists. This experienced team of arts professionals guides students in building a portfolio or audition skills for their next level of study: an arts-focused high school, college, university or conservatory. Three major focus areas are: - developing students' artistic skills and creativity; - broadening students' awareness of the arts and; - helping students recognize and explore career options in the art and arts-related industries.

This intensive summer arts experience connects students to community and cultural resources along with access to careers and lifelong learning in the arts.

The daily schedule includes studio work and experiences with professional artists, both on and off-site. In the studios, students develop and improve their technical skills and creative expression in their selected art form. Time is dedicated to rehearsals, attending professional performances, visiting professional arts venues and exploring potential careers. Students are given opportunities to perform in selected venues around New York City, and to show their original work in an informal, cabaret-like setting called the SAI Café. The Institute culminates with an exhibition and live performance for families and the local community showcasing the students’ work from all studios. Students who complete the program in good standing are eligible to receive a 1/2 unit of credit that may be applied towards an elective arts credit or a Regents or local diploma-major sequence upon approval from their school. Our cultural partners are American Ballet Theatre (Dance), Roundabout Theatre Company (Theater), Theatre for a New Audience (Theater) and Tribeca Film Institute (Film). West Point Summer Leaders Experience

The United States Military Academy at West Point Summer Leaders Experience (SLE) gives high school juniors a week to experience life as a cadet to inform their college selection decision. SLE is a fast-paced program of academic classes, military training, physical fitness training and intramural athletics conducted during the month of June each year. There will be two week-long SLE sessions this upcoming June. Session 1 will take place from June 7-13, 2014, and Session 2 will take place from June 14,-20, 2014. SLE is highly competitive – there are normally 6,000 applicants and 1,000 attendees. The cost to attend SLE is $400. The deadline to apply is April 11th. Women’s Debate Institute

The Women’s Debate Institute (WDI) is a tuition-free camp that provides young women the opportunity to be a part of a strong community of women who love debate. At the WDI, high school girls have the opportunity to learn policy and Lincoln-Douglas debate skills from some of the top female debaters in the country. Working one-on-one with former NDT and CEDA winners gives girls the competitive edge they need to be successful debaters. The WDI also teaches students what it means to be a woman in debate and exposes girls to the rich community of women in this activity. Furthermore, our “College Seminar” gives each student the opportunity to learn how to make higher education a reality, regardless of their current situation. Bella Abzug Leadership Institute: Summer Leadership and Debate Program

Our free 12-day leadership and debate training program includes workshops in debate techniques, public speaking, critical thinking, policy research, writing speeches, articles, and developing the skills to analyze contemporary public policy issues. Highly accomplished female professionals, who work in the top echelons of corporate, business, government, and not for profit sectors as well as women business owners, elected officials and diplomats, come as guest lecturers and also conduct workshops. The Bella Abzug Leadership Institute (BALI) has developed a closer partnership with the New York City Urban Debate League (NYCUDL), the organization that represents competitive debate teams from public high schools throughout NYC. Together with the coaches of the NYCUDL, our students take a four-hour lab on policy and public forum debate which results in actual debate competitions at the end of each week of the 12-Day Leadership and Debate Training. Sadie Nash is excited to release Summer Institute 2014 applications! The Sadie Nash Leadership Project promotes leadership, service, and activism among youth. Our unique programs provide a dynamic and intensive learning experience that centers on the achievements of women, the use of role models, service-based learning and independent social justice projects. Our programs are designed to strengthen, empower, and equip young women as agents for change in their lives and in the world. During our Summer Institute, we bring together dynamic young women leaders like you to share ideas, reflect on experiences, meet amazing role models, and to help transform your community through direct action. We are currently recruiting a strong group of self identified women (inclusive of trans youth*) leaders to join the Sadie Nash Leadership Project for the 2014 Summer Institute. Futures and Options: Core Internship Program

Students in the Futures and Options Core Internship Program participate in paid internships at New York City businesses, non-profits, and government organizations. The interns work 12-15 hours per week after school or up to 40 hours per week during the summer. Additionally, interns receive ongoing support from Futures and Options staff and attend monthly work-readiness workshops and career exploration field trips. The program is open to students in 11th and 12th grade. The Core Internship Program operates on a rolling basis, and students can apply now to be considered for both spring and summer opportunities. The final deadline to be considered for the summer is May 1st, but applying earlier increases the likelihood of getting an internship. Interested students can apply online. Google Science Fair

The Google Science Fair is a global online science and technology competition open to youth ages 13 to 18. Entrants must come up with a question to investigate and carry out an experiment, or test out a solution to a problem. Projects are judged on the criteria of inspirational entry or idea, capacity to make an impact, passion for science or engineering, excellence of method, and communication skills. The grand prize includes a 10-day trip to the Galapagos Islands with National Geographic Expeditions, an experience at the Virgin Galactic Spaceport, and $50,000 in scholarship funding. 2014 SUSTAINABLE DIRECTIONS SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM Deadline: May 13
The Urban Assembly-Triskeles Sustainable Directions Summer Internship Program provides internships in a variety of progressive businesses and non-profit organizations that are committed to sustainability and social entrepreneurship. We screen students to determine their areas of interest, professional aspiration and preferred work location. We train them and prepare them for interviews and the internship experiences and then match them with the perfect opportunity. Participants also have group orientation, weekly seminars, and a culminating group project that aim to develop students’ leadership, understanding of sustainability and social entrepreneurship, transferable job skills, and career knowledge. The Point CDC: College Preparation/Writing Workshops

THE POINT partners with Urban Word NYC to deliver weekly literary arts education through poetry and spoken word. Founded on the belief that teenagers can and must speak for themselves, Urban Word NYC™ (UW) has been at the forefront of the youth spoken word, poetry and hip-hop movements in New York City since 1999.

The purpose of this workshop series is to prepare high school students for not only college courses, but for college life itself. Students will be challenged to take their writing skills to the next level while establishing a deep connection to the power of their own voice. As a group, we will dissect the works of visionary writers who have inspired social change while writing our own stories into existence. We will also discuss the ins and outs of everyday college life. Students will receive knowledge from lessons that often take many their entire college career to learn. Sing for Hope Youth Chorus

The Sing for Hope Youth Chorus strives to ignite a love of singing, foster a safe community for self-expression, and encourage chorus members to reach their full potential for artistic and personal excellence.

New York City high school students from all five boroughs are encouraged to audition. No prior music experience is necessary, and membership is free. Those accepted to participate in the Sing for Hope Youth Chorus receive vocal training while developing performance and sight-singing skills. Chorus members have the opportunity to learn from talented members of Sing for Hope’s Volunteer Artist Roster and perform throughout New York City. Rehearsals are held in Midtown Manhattan twice a week, after school.

Audition Procedures

Students will perform simple pitch-matching exercises and sing a song of their choice a cappella. Auditions take place throughout the year by appointment . Urban Word: Winter Word Workshops February 4th-March 19th 
This winter the Urban Word is offering unique word workshops focused on monologue development, music and poetry. The two being offered are People on the Train & Lyrical Melodies. People on the Train is offered by Katie Issel Pitre on Tuesdays February 4th- March 18th from 4:30pm-6:30pm. The course focuses on character voice and how it works on stage and in your writing. Through developing dramatic monologues, ―People on the Train‖ will workshop aspects of writing and performance centered around presence, narrative and ―voice‖. A great workshop that will help develop presence, and narrative for page and stage. Lyrical Melodies is a combination of Spoken Word & Music and is offered by Shanelle Gabriel on Wednesday from February 5th – March 19th at 4:30-6:30pm. Here you will learn the finesse in order to effectively blend genres (song, rap and poetry) and. It focuses on developing techniques to improve both vocal and written abilities then learning how to find the best ways to merge them within new bodies of work. United States Naval Academy Summer Programs

Did you know that the United States Naval Academy invites over 3,000 students per year to participate in our summer programs? These programs offer your students a chance to visit Annapolis and experience the Naval Academy first-hand. Our Summer STEM program is designed for rising 8th-11th graders who are interested in pursuing education in the science, technology, engineering and math fields. During the STEM program, students will be exposed to world-class lab facilities and have the opportunity to learn from some of the best college professors in the country. In addition, they will meet fellow students from all over the country that share a similar passion for learning. The Summer STEM session dates are as follows:

City Parks Foundation: Green Teens

The Green Teen Program is a New York City Parks & Recreation anti-litter initiative to engage young people to become stewards of their parklands and recreation centers. The program enrolls Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) participants, Recreation Center youth members, and teen volunteers through the NYC Service website. Through the program, the teens learn how they can make a ―green‖ positive impact in their local neighborhood parks and recreation centers by removing litter, collecting recyclables, watering trees, attending sustainability workshops and most importantly encouraging the public not to litter. Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program

Must be 16 years of age for most laboratories. Some laboratories may accept a 15 year old applicant. Please check individual lab description for more details.

Award Duration and StipendParticipating students spend 8 weeks during the summer doing research. Program dates are fixed and cannot be changed. Students are expected to participate 8 continuous weeks. No vacation time is allowed during these eight weeks.
It is strongly recommended to apply to laboratories that are close to your residence. No travel/relocation allowance will be provided.
The stipend amount for students will be $3,300 for the 8 weeks, which will be paid in three installments. Returning students will receive $3,800 for the 8 weeks. The first check two checks will be distributed during the internship and the third check will be distributed at the end of the internship.

Have a story to tell? How about expressing your thoughts through a movie, song or animation of your own creation? RECYouth is a multimedia extracurricular program where you’ll learn video and audio production, photography, and graphic design while encouraging your creative expression. Learn to use digital tools and professional software to create and edit footage, recordings and photos. By the end of the course, you will have independently or collaboratively completed a final project and will have the opportunity to showcase your digital creations at a community screening or exhibit. Dream Catchers Afterschool Workshops

“Dream Catchers” is a series of 14 week workshops, led by Cheryl Paley and Ruthie Azarch. For the past 23 years Ms. Paley has directed theatre for social change and created and facilitated workshops for young people, using the arts as a prevention tool. Ruthie Azarch is a visual artist who has created workshops and businesses around utilizing art as a transformational tool. Groups of 10 – 15 young people between the ages of 13 and 21 will meet and engage in journal writing, poetry and drama workshops, visual arts, improvisation and a host of arts-based techniques as a springboard for personal growth and exploration and a forum for group discussion on issues relevant to their daily lives. At the end of each 14 week session, participants will create and present their own final project for an invited audience. The boys group will meet on Mondays from 4 – 6pm and the girls group will meet on Wednesdays from 4:30 – 6:30. UpBeat NYC uses the pursuit of musical excellence and ensemble performance to bring about positive change in the lives of children in the South Bronx. UpBeat offers an orchestra program for children 8 through 21 years of age. Students enrolled in the orchestra program receive instruction on a string, woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument three or more days per week. Classes include private lessons, group lessons, and ensemble rehearsals. Eligible students will reside in the South Bronx, typically in the Mott Haven section, and will be able to make a commitment to attending at least 3 days of classes per week after school. Instruments are provided on loan free of charge, and there is no cost to participate in the program. New York Public Library: Innovation Labs Apply Now!
Innovation Labs (IL), a new program of the New York Public Library (NYPL), is an interdisciplinary program about critical engagement with the world around us. Using blogging, podcasti0ng, and video game design, participants will observe, investigate, and assess issues pertaining to the spaces and situations with which they interact every day. Participants will hone their research, analysis, and presentation skills as they refine the critical thinking that is essential to the Common Core Standards. They will become producers of informational media rather than consumers, and be able to express their opinions about and solutions to issues that matter to them.

Program Details:
 Located at 3 sites: Columbus Library (10th Ave. and 50th Street); St. George Library (by the Staten Island Ferry Terminal in Staten Island); Bronx Library Center (Fordham Section of the Bronx)
 Each site will host two cohorts of up to 25 students. One cohort will attend the program on Mondays and Wednesdays; the other on Tuesdays and Thursdays; Fridays are open days for trips, special projects, and guest speakers

We will be assessing student mastery of our learning technologies and communication platforms through a series of digital badges, which are awarded after successful completion of a task or assignment. Think of digital badging as similar to acquiring a Girl Scout or Boy Scout badge, except they exist in the digital realm. Mozilla Backpack is the platform that we will use to track badging. Badges will be awarded for skills like writing a coherent blog post and sharing it with three other individuals (hard skills) but also for being able to collaborate i0n a group, provide constructive feedback on another’s work, overall attendance and participation, and other “soft” skills. Member institutions and associations are provided with opportunities to recruit, enroll, and prepare participating Ventures Scholars for undergraduate and graduate studies, and ultimately careers in these professions. Ventures Scholars are also provided with a variety of informative resources to help them learn about the college and career planning process. New York City Housing Authority Digital Vans Ongoing
New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) offers Digital Vans – free computer labs on wheels for NYCHA residents and other community members to link up to the Internet, search for job opportunities, or touch up resumes. The vans travel around the city, stopping in areas that have limited or no access to broadband high-speed internet service. Its eight laptop computers have wireless Internet access and connect to printers. WiFi also allows people with their own laptops to be outside the van and access the Internet for free.
