Creative Activism in Climate Change

WHAT WILL PARTICIPANTS DO?
·         conduct research in urban ecology and climate change at either the Bronx Zoo, Central  Park Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo, OR Queens Zoo to better understand sustainability issues in our city
·         explore different methods for expressing themselves in ways that will motivate people in the digital realm
·         produce a relevant, scientifically accurate project that will connect people to conservation issues facing New York City
·         create new connections with people that share their interests

WHAT WILL PARTICIPANTS RECEIVE?
·         60 hours of instruction and interaction over the course of the program
·         access to respected experts in the field of urban ecology and digital media technology
·         public transportation fees for all sessions
·         snacks during after-school sessions
·         $125 stipend upon completion of the program

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
Participants must meet the following requirements to be eligible for participation in this program:
·         are between the ages of 14 and 18 years
·         have a valid Social Security Number
·         can complete 60 hours of instruction through after-school workshops 2 times per week, from 4:00–6:30 PM and 4-5 weekend workshops, from 9:30 AM–4:30 PM (Dates, times, and projects are site specific as described below.)
·         can share and/or highlight their team project to general Zoo visitors, WCS staff, Eyebeam staff, peers, family, and friends at 2 events at the Zoo and Eyebeam headquarters.

Each WCS Zoo will partner with a different digital media artist who will provide media instruction.

Electronic Design & Construction @ Central Park Zoo
Scrapyard Challenge founder, Jonah Brucker-Cohen, will teach about sustainability and climate change through the exploration of trash. Learn to build simple electronic projects out of found or discarded "junk" such as old electronics, clothing, furniture, outdated computer equipment, and appliances.

The program will take place at the CENTRAL PARK ZOO on the following dates:
·         18 after-school sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting on Feb. 25th and ending on May 1st
·         4 full-day Saturday sessions will take place on March 1st, 15th, April 12th and 26th

Geo-spatial Modeling & Analysis @ Bronx Zoo
Manahatta2409.org is an interactive, map-based, web platform that will engage your imagination in one of the greatest challenges of our generation: designing the sustainable city. Creators, Eric W. Sanderson and Kim Fisher, will train participants to use the Manahatta2409 platform to create their own vision of a climate-resilient, sustainable New York City at a block-by-block level and share it with others.

The program will take place at the BRONX ZOO on the following dates:
·         18 after-school sessions will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting on Feb. 6th and ending on April 10th
·         4 full-day Saturday sessions will take place on Mar. 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th

GIS Mapping @ Prospect Park Zoo
HabitatMap partner, Michael Heimbinder, will train participants to use the HabitatMap platform and open source GIS tools to create an interactive map exploring the visual impacts of climate change on local communities, politics, and infrastructure within NYC.

The program will take place at the PROSPECT PARK ZOO on the following dates:
·         14 after-school sessions will take place on Wednesdays and Thursdays starting on Feb. 12th and ending on May 1st
·         5 full-day Saturday sessions will take place on Feb. 22ndMar. 15th, 29th, Apr. 12th and 26th

Transmedia Storytelling @ Queens Zoo
Eyebeam digital artist, Paolo Cirio, works in the framework of cultural, political, and economic realities and information to fabricate new realities. Learn to create a transmedia storytelling project - a technique used to tell a story or experience across multiple platforms and formats, using various digital media tools such as video, photography, and social media.

The program will take place at the QUEENS ZOO on the following dates:
·         17 after-school sessions on Mondays and Tuesdays starting on Feb. 24th and ending on Apr. 29th
·         3 full-day Sunday sessions on Mar. 2nd, 16th, and Apr. 27th



CCC YouthAction Leadership Course
Due 2/12/14
CCC is a multi-issue child advocacy organization that seeks to ensure that every child is healthy, housed, educated, and safe. YouthAction NYC engages New York City youth from diverse backgrounds in civic participation and advocacy. Students who participate in the YCLC will:
Gain the skills to advocate on behalf of themselves, their schools, and their communities.
Learn how to conduct hands-on research, such as public polling and site visits.
Meet with government officials to discuss their ideas for improving New York City.
Become better leaders through problem solving and critical thinking.
Strengthen their communication and public speaking skills.
Make lifelong friends with the diverse group of peers in the program!

The Spring 2014 YCLC will begin on Monday, March 3rd. Because space is limited, I urge you to disseminate the attached information to students and families as soon as possible. Attached you will find a) a flyer to hang and distribute; b) a letter with more information for school and/or community leaders; c) a separate letter for guardians; d) a permission slip and; e) an application for the students to fill out and return to me no later than Wednesday, February 12th. More specific instructions on applying and returning paperwork can be found within these documents.

2014 NYC Parks Millennium Basketball Winter League
Get a jump on that jump shot!  The 2014 NYC Parks Millennium Basketball Winter League is welcoming boys and girls ages 8-17 in all five boroughs of New York City for competitive play.
The League, part of the Junior Knicks League and presented by Sprite and Chase, kicks off on Saturday, January 25 and finishes with a citywide championship game on Saturday, April 19.

Bronx Loaf Writers’ Conference Deadline: February 3rd
Bronx Loaf is a writers’ conference for teen writers that takes place over three days this coming spring, from April 11-13, 2014. It is held at the UA Bronx Academy of Letters (339 Morris Avenue), hence the ―Bronx‖ part of Bronx Loaf. The idea and model for Bronx Loaf was inspired by Bread Loaf, the oldest writers’ conference in the country (hence the ―Loaf‖ part of Bronx Loaf).

Our goal is for Bronx Loaf to introduce teen writers to what it feels like to participate in a professional-style creative writing workshop, which means students will share their creative writing with other teen writers from around New York City and beyond. Each workshop will be led by a published author. This year we have an amazing roster of workshop leaders, including Gabrielle Hamilton and Andrea Cremer. The aim is for every participant to create a publishable piece of writing.

Over the course of the Bronx Loaf Writers’ Conference, teen writers will:
 Participate in thoughtful, rigorous workshops led by professional writers, who will also conduct one-on-one tutorials
 Enjoy several opportunities to read their own work in front of a live audience AND to publish in Breaking Bread, the Bronx Loaf anthology of student pieces
 Attend multiple public readings, featuring our workshop leaders
 Have ample time to break bread, enjoy fellowship, and make connections with writers from public and private schools

Harlem Youth Court Paid Internship
Deadline: Mar 15
The Harlem Youth Court is actively recruiting members for our upcoming 2014-2015 cohort. This program is a wonderful paid internship that will allow young people to contribute back to their community, help their peers, become college ready, and become exposed to the criminal justice system.

Youth court members:
Hear real-life cases for youths who have committed minor offenses
Serve their communities by helping other teens
Learn about the justice system, public speaking skills and how to be a leader
Build their resumes and college applications
Can earn community service hours for their participation
Can earn a stipend for active participation

In addition to serving on the youth court, Harlem Youth Court members participate in a wide range of group activities, such as field trips to local courthouses, fund-raising events, community service projects and social activities like bowling. Our youth court members are youth between the ages of 14-19 who live in New York City and have a deep passion for improving their communities. This year, our members represent four boroughs, but most of them come from the Harlem area. Our latest group was chosen from over 180 applicants. Amongst our current group of members we have talented writers, singers, dancers, aspiring lawyers, judges, and future leaders.

All Harlem Youth Court members first go through a two-month training program in which they learn about the justice system, how youth court works, and how to serve as judge, advocate, bailiff and jury. Most important, they learn how to work together as a team. Every youth who successfully completes the training program can become a full member of the Harlem Youth Court.
To apply, you must be 14-18 years old by September 1, 2014 and still in high school. If you are under 18 years old, you will need your parent or guardians permission to join. Trainings and youth court sessions are held at 170 E 121st Street, New York, NY 10035. The next training will take place during the summer. The dates have not yet been finalized.

The Point CDC: International Center for Photography Apply Now!
A collaborative program with the International Center of Photography, ICP at THE POINT teaches youth students the fundamentals of black-and-white photography. ICP at THE POINT was a 2005 President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities Coming Up Taller Award-winner. United States Naval Academy Summer Programs 
Multiple Dates 
Did you know that the United States Naval Academy invites over 3,000 students per year to participate in our summer programs? These programs offer your students a chance to visit Annapolis and experience the Naval Academy first-hand. Our Summer STEM program is designed for rising 8th-11th graders who are interested in pursuing education in the science, technology, engineering and math fields. During the STEM program, students will be exposed to world-class lab facilities and have the opportunity to learn from some of the best college professors in the country. In addition, they will meet fellow students from all over the country that share a similar passion for learning. The Summer STEM session dates are as follows: 
 Rising 8th and 9th graders: June 2-7, 2014 
 Rising 10th graders: June 9-14, 2014 
 Rising 11th graders: June 16-20, 2014 
Tuition for the Summer STEM Program is $350. The deadline to apply is April 15th. 
The Summer Seminar Program, designed for rising 12th graders, gives students the opportunity to find out if they have what it takes to be midshipmen. The program allows students to experience the rigorous academics, physical challenges and student life at the Naval Academy. Summer Seminar is perfect for students who have no prior exposure to a service academy as well as those who are trying to decide if a service academy is right for them. The Summer Seminar Program dates are as follows:

The Summer Arts Institute is a tuition-free, intensive, arts program for New York City public school students entering grades 8-12, held at Frank Sinatra School of the Arts High School in Astoria, Queens. Students can major in dance, theater, instrumental music (band), vocal music, film, photography or visual arts. The program is designed for students at an intermediate or advanced level of study in their chosen discipline. Summer Arts Institute offers a unique opportunity for students to work with Department of Education arts specialists, partnering cultural organizations, and guest artists. This experienced team of arts professionals guides students in building a portfolio or audition skills for their next level of study: an arts-focused high school, college, university or conservatory. Three major focus areas are: - developing students' artistic skills and creativity; - broadening students' awareness of the arts and; - helping students recognize and explore career options in the art and arts-related industries.

This intensive summer arts experience connects students to community and cultural resources along with access to careers and lifelong learning in the arts.

The daily schedule includes studio work and experiences with professional artists, both on and off-site. In the studios, students develop and improve their technical skills and creative expression in their selected art form. Time is dedicated to rehearsals, attending professional performances, visiting professional arts venues and exploring potential careers. Students are given opportunities to perform in selected venues around New York City, and to show their original work in an informal, cabaret-like setting called the SAI CafĂ©. The Institute culminates with an exhibition and live performance for families and the local community showcasing the students’ work from all studios. Students who complete the program in good standing are eligible to receive a 1/2 unit of credit that may be applied towards an elective arts credit or a Regents or local diploma-major sequence upon approval from their school. Our cultural partners are American Ballet Theatre (Dance), Roundabout Theatre Company (Theater), Theatre for a New Audience (Theater) and Tribeca Film Institute (Film). City Parks Foundation: Green Teens
Ongoing 

The Green Teen Program is a New York City Parks & Recreation anti-litter initiative to engage young people to become stewards of their parklands and recreation centers. The program enrolls Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) participants, Recreation Center youth members, and teen volunteers through the NYC Service website. Through the program, the teens learn how they can make a ―green‖ positive impact in their local neighborhood parks and recreation centers by removing litter, collecting recyclables, watering trees, attending sustainability workshops and most importantly encouraging the public not to litter. Iridescent Technovation Challenge 
Deadline: January 31st
Since 2010, the Iridescent Technovation Challenge has engaged over 2,000 middle and high school girls from 19 countries. Technovation is a 3-month technology entrepreneurship online curriculum that guides teams of 1-5 high school girls – most with zero prior coding experience – to research, design, code and pitch real mobile phone applications that seek to solve world problems.

Teachers work in partnership with a female tech professional to guide their students through the curriculum towards submitting apps, a business plan and five minute pitch video. Teams will also be supported by an online forum, where they can ask any question about the Technovation topics or curriculum and have their questions answered within 24 hours.

New York will hold a regional pitch night where all teams are invited to present their apps. The winning team from the New York region will be flown to California, where they have a chance to present their app to tech companies and compete for funding to continue preparing their app for the market.

Schools and teachers interested in learning more about the time commitment and necessary resources to participate in this competition should view the starter kit. The deadline to register a team is January 31st.  White House Film Festival, Call for Student Entries
The White House has announced the first-ever White House Student Film Festival: video contest created just for K-12 students, and whose finalists will have their short films shown at the White House. The finalists’ videos may also be featured on the White House website, YouTube channel, and social media pages.  The White House is looking for videos that highlight the power of technology in schools. The videos should show how students currently use technology in the classroom or how technology will be used in education in the future. Google Code-In Contest

The 4th year of the Google Code-in [0] contest for 13-17 year old pre-university students. This is a global, online contest that introduces young students to the world of open source software development. Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program

Eligibility RequirementsHigh school students who have completed at least Grade 9. A graduating senior is eligible to apply
Must be 16 years of age for most laboratories. Some laboratories may accept a 15 year old applicant. Please check individual lab description for more details.
Applicants must be US citizens and participation by Permanent Resident Aliens is limited. Please check individual lab descriptions for participation of Permanent Resident Aliens.
Dual citizens may be accepted at some labs, but not all. Interested students should contact the individual labs to determine if dual citizens may apply.
Award Duration and StipendParticipating students spend 8 weeks during the summer doing research. Program dates are fixed and cannot be changed. Students are expected to participate 8 continuous weeks. No vacation time is allowed during these eight weeks.
It is strongly recommended to apply to laboratories that are close to your residence. No travel/relocation allowance will be provided.
The stipend amount for students will be $3,300 for the 8 weeks, which will be paid in three installments. Returning students will receive $3,800 for the 8 weeks. The first check two checks will be distributed during the internship and the third check will be distributed at the end of the internship.

City of New York Parks & Recreation: RECYouth: REEL Education for Youth Apply Now!
Have a story to tell? How about expressing your thoughts through a movie, song or animation of your own creation? RECYouth is a multimedia extracurricular program where you’ll learn video and audio production, photography, and graphic design while encouraging your creative expression. Learn to use digital tools and professional software to create and edit footage, recordings and photos. By the end of the course, you will have independently or collaboratively completed a final project and will have the opportunity to showcase your digital creations at a community screening or exhibit. RECYouth is free and open to all New York City teens who meet the following criteria:

Attention students currently enrolled in grades 7-12! Write an original 700- to 1,000-word essay created exclusively for The DuPont Challenge. As one of the foremost student science and technology prize programs in the U.S. and Canada, the Challenge helps to increase science literacy among students and motivates them to excel in communicating scientific ideas. Bank of America Charitable Foundation’s Student Leaders® Program Deadline: January 31st
The Bank of America Charitable Foundation’s Student Leaders® Program is now accepting applications for the 2014 Student Leaders® Program. Since its inception in 2004, the Bank of America Student Leaders Program has recognized more than 2,000 exemplary high school juniors and seniors who have a passion for improving their communities. The program helps students gain a greater understanding of how nonprofits create impact in the community and helps develop them as the next generation of community leaders through two components:

 An eight-week paid internship in the summer of 2014 with a nonprofit organization selected by the bank. This internship is designed to provide opportunities for the students to develop and apply leadership skills through hands-on work experience, while raising their awareness of community issues addressed by their Host Organization.

 The week-long, all-expense paid Student Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. from July 13-18, 2014. Conducted in partnership with the Close Up Foundation, the Summit introduces students to aspects of civic, social and business leadership and provides them with knowledge and skills they will use throughout their life to create positive community change.

Dream Catchers Afterschool Workshops

“Dream Catchers” is a series of 14 week workshops, led by Cheryl Paley and Ruthie Azarch. For the past 23 years Ms. Paley has directed theatre for social change and created and facilitated workshops for young people, using the arts as a prevention tool. Ruthie Azarch is a visual artist who has created workshops and businesses around utilizing art as a transformational tool. Groups of 10 – 15 young people between the ages of 13 and 21 will meet and engage in journal writing, poetry and drama workshops, visual arts, improvisation and a host of arts-based techniques as a springboard for personal growth and exploration and a forum for group discussion on issues relevant to their daily lives. At the end of each 14 week session, participants will create and present their own final project for an invited audience. The boys group will meet on Mondays from 4 – 6pm and the girls group will meet on Wednesdays from 4:30 – 6:30. Educational Alliance Teen Center 
Since our inception in 2005, the Educational Alliance Teen Center (known affectionately as “Edgies Teen Center” or “Edgies” for short) has quickly become a hugely successful center for teens who live or go to school on or near the Lower East Side. We offer a variety of activities in a healthy, safe, and fun environment – all free of charge to members. Activities include cooking and nutrition classes, sports, arts, College Prep, and discussion groups. The College Prep program includes SAT classes, college advisement, financial aid / scholarship support, college application support, college visits, essay writing guidance, and an early college awareness program for 9th and 10th grade students. UpBeat NYC uses the pursuit of musical excellence and ensemble performance to bring about positive change in the lives of children in the South Bronx. UpBeat offers an orchestra program for children 8 through 21 years of age. Students enrolled in the orchestra program receive instruction on a string, woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument three or more days per week. Classes include private lessons, group lessons, and ensemble rehearsals. Eligible students will reside in the South Bronx, typically in the Mott Haven section, and will be able to make a commitment to attending at least 3 days of classes per week after school. Instruments are provided on loan free of charge, and there is no cost to participate in the program. There is currently a waiting list for acceptance into this program, so interested students should apply now! New York Public Library: Innovation Labs Apply Now!
Innovation Labs (IL), a new program of the New York Public Library (NYPL), is an interdisciplinary program about critical engagement with the world around us. Using blogging, podcasti0ng, and video game design, participants will observe, investigate, and assess issues pertaining to the spaces and situations with which they interact every day. Participants will hone their research, analysis, and presentation skills as they refine the critical thinking that is essential to the Common Core Standards. They will become producers of informational media rather than consumers, and be able to express their opinions about and solutions to issues that matter to them.

Program Details:
 Located at 3 sites: Columbus Library (10th Ave. and 50th Street); St. George Library (by the Staten Island Ferry Terminal in Staten Island); Bronx Library Center (Fordham Section of the Bronx)
 Each site will host two cohorts of up to 25 students. One cohort will attend the program on Mondays and Wednesdays; the other on Tuesdays and Thursdays; Fridays are open days for trips, special projects, and guest speakers
 Enrollment is open to students in grades 7 through 10
 Enrollment is ongoing until the 25 slots per cohort are filled
 Each program meeting lasts from 3:30-6:00pm
 Program sessions will include time for students to complete their school homework, as well as completion of IL work

We will be assessing student mastery of our learning technologies and communication platforms through a series of digital badges, which are awarded after successful completion of a task or assignment. Think of digital badging as similar to acquiring a Girl Scout or Boy Scout badge, except they exist in the digital realm. Mozilla Backpack is the platform that we will use to track badging. Badges will be awarded for skills like writing a coherent blog post and sharing it with three other individuals (hard skills) but also for being able to collaborate i0n a group, provide constructive feedback on another’s work, overall attendance and participation, and other “soft” skills. THE DOOR'S THIS WAY AHEAD (TWA) PROGRAM
TWA is a retail internship opportunity with the Gap / Old Navy stores.
In order to apply participants must:

·        Attend a NYC GED, High School or College

·        Be 16-21 years of age (Must be 16 by April 16, 2014)

·        Have proper documentation (SS Card, Proof of Age, Authorization to Work, and Proof in school)

·        Willing to make a 9 month COMMITMENT to the TWA Program

During the 4 months of Career Exploration and Job Readiness training (February to May) Gap Inc. C-Span's StudentCam Deadline: January 20th
StudentCam is C-SPAN’s annual national video documentary competition that encourages students to think critically about issues that affect our communities and our nation. The 2014 theme is “A Message to the U.S. Congress: What’s the most important issue the U.S. Congress should consider in 2014?” The competition is open to all students in grades 6-12, divided into middle school and high school categories. The grand prize is a $5,000 award for the student(s) and $750 for the school to spend on digital video equipment. Runners up will receive lesser prizes. The deadline to apply is January 20th. Emma L. Bowen Foundation

The Emma L. Bowen Foundation was created in 1989 to prepare minority youth for careers in the media industry. The Foundation’s program is unlike traditional intern programs in that students work for partner companies during summers and school breaks from the summer following their senior year in high school until they graduate from college. During the four-year program, students have an opportunity to learn many aspects of corporate operations and develop company-specific skills. Corporations have an opportunity to train and mentor students with the option of full-time employment upon completion of their college degrees. Students can earn hourly salary and matching scholarship funds for college expenses. Academic excellence is a key component of the program – students are required to maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average to remain in good standing. The Foundation staff works closely with corporate partners to monitor each student’s academic work and progress. An annual summer conference, a mentoring program, and a technical program are also provided to further enhance the student’s knowledge and experience.
Eligibility Requirements: Any minority student (African American, Hispanic, Asian or Native American) who is a graduating high school senior or college freshman, has a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0, is interested in pursuing a career in the media industry, and plans to attend a four-year accredited college or university is eligible to apply to the Emma L. Bowen Foundation work/study program. Eligible applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal residents of the United States, and speak and write English fluently to be considered. Your grade transcript, at least two educational references from teachers and/or advisors, and a 500-to-1,000 word essay must accompany the application form.

New York City Housing Authority Digital Vans Ongoing
New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) offers Digital Vans – free computer labs on wheels for NYCHA residents and other community members to link up to the Internet, search for job opportunities, or touch up resumes. The vans travel around the city, stopping in areas that have limited or no access to broadband high-speed internet service. Its eight laptop computers have wireless Internet access and connect to printers. WiFi also allows people with their own laptops to be outside the van and access the Internet for free. Urban Word: Winter Word Workshops February 4th-March 19th 
This winter the Urban Word is offering unique word workshops focused on monologue development, music and poetry. The two being offered are People on the Train & Lyrical Melodies. People on the Train is offered by Katie Issel Pitre on Tuesdays February 4th- March 18th from 4:30pm-6:30pm. The course focuses on character voice and how it works on stage and in your writing. Through developing dramatic monologues, ―People on the Train‖ will workshop aspects of writing and performance centered around presence, narrative and ―voice‖. A great workshop that will help develop presence, and narrative for page and stage. Lyrical Melodies is a combination of Spoken Word & Music and is offered by Shanelle Gabriel on Wednesday from February 5th – March 19th at 4:30-6:30pm. Here you will learn the finesse in order to effectively blend genres (song, rap and poetry) and. It focuses on developing techniques to improve both vocal and written abilities then learning how to find the best ways to merge them within new bodies of work. New York Botanical Garden: Explainers Program

Want to have an exciting internship and get paid for it? The Explainers Program offered by the New York Botanical Garden offers a unique experience to high school students ages 14 – 17. Explainers facilitate experiences with nature and plant science for children and families. Using seasonal lessons and explorations of the garden, Explainers prepare children to use their senses as tools for exploring the garden. Explainers rotate through activity stations that are located both outside in the garden and inside the Discovery Center. They commit to a minimum of 125 training and volunteer hours.
