City of New York Parks & Recreation: RECYouth: REEL Education for Youth Apply Now!
Have a story to tell? How about expressing your thoughts through a movie, song or animation of your own creation? RECYouth is a multimedia extracurricular program where you’ll learn video and audio production, photography, and graphic design while encouraging your creative expression. Learn to use digital tools and professional software to create and edit footage, recordings and photos. By the end of the course, you will have independently or collaboratively completed a final project and will have the opportunity to showcase your digital creations at a community screening or exhibit. RECYouth is free and open to all New York City teens who meet the following criteria:

 Recreation Center member (membership is free to youth 17 and under)

 Committed to length of program

 Interested in multimedia, arts, or digital technology

The Whitney Museum: Youth Insights
Deadline: January 10th 
Youth Insights (YI) is a free, after-school program open to New York City high school students in ninth through twelfth grade. Each semester, YI brings teens together with contemporary artists providing opportunities to work collaboratively, discuss art critically, think creatively, and create art and writing inspired by this exchange. Spring sessions begin in February. YI Writers meet once a week on Tuesdays from 4 to 6:30 pm. YI Artists meet once a week on Wednesdays from 4 to 6:30 pm. Students also receive a one-trip MetroCard each week to travel home from the Whitney. Apply online now. The DuPont Challenge® Science Essay Competition Deadline: January 31st
Attention students currently enrolled in grades 7-12! Write an original 700- to 1,000-word essay created exclusively for The DuPont Challenge. As one of the foremost student science and technology prize programs in the U.S. and Canada, the Challenge helps to increase science literacy among students and motivates them to excel in communicating scientific ideas. Bank of America Charitable Foundation’s Student Leaders® Program Deadline: January 31st
The Bank of America Charitable Foundation’s Student Leaders® Program is now accepting applications for the 2014 Student Leaders® Program. Since its inception in 2004, the Bank of America Student Leaders Program has recognized more than 2,000 exemplary high school juniors and seniors who have a passion for improving their communities. The program helps students gain a greater understanding of how nonprofits create impact in the community and helps develop them as the next generation of community leaders through two components:

 An eight-week paid internship in the summer of 2014 with a nonprofit organization selected by the bank. This internship is designed to provide opportunities for the students to develop and apply leadership skills through hands-on work experience, while raising their awareness of community issues addressed by their Host Organization.

 The week-long, all-expense paid Student Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. from July 13-18, 2014. Conducted in partnership with the Close Up Foundation, the Summit introduces students to aspects of civic, social and business leadership and provides them with knowledge and skills they will use throughout their life to create positive community change.

NYC Omega Historically Black Colleges and Universities College Tour Deadline: November 30th
Xi Phi, a New York City-based Graduate Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and Community Uplift through Perseverance (CUP) sponsors and underwrites the New York City Omega Black College Tour. The tour enables African American high school students enrolled in NYC schools and schools in the broader metropolitan area to visit 15 Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Over the last 22 years, the vision that the African American experience for youth could be challenged through mentoring, leadership development, and exposure to educational opportunities available outside the boundaries of NYC has become an attainable reality. This resulted in transforming the futures of over 600 of our young people. The Black College Tour 2014 theme is ―Expanding the Minds of Today’s Youth.‖ The tour is a seven-day, six-night trip scheduled for February 15 through 21, 2014. The School Art League: Museum Experience Deadline: December 6th
The School Art League, in collaboration with the Office of Arts and Special Projects, invites sophomores and juniors interested in the arts and humanities to participate in the Museum Experience. This free program gives students a rare opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at New York City’s world-class museums, and learn how these cultural institutions help us reflect on the past, value the present, anticipate the future, and remind us of our shared humanity. Students will meet staff who will share ―the back story‖ of exhibitions, give personalized gallery talks, and discuss career opportunities. Three New York City cultural institutions will host a select group of students on a designated day during each of the school breaks:

 February 18, 2014: International Center of Photography

 April 14, 2014: Society of Illustrators

Each three-hour workshop is based on the museum’s unique collection and includes:

BAM is pleased to announce the 2014 season of the unique and FREE after-school program Dancing into the Future. Teamwork, commitment, and self-confidence are the central tenets of this intensive workshop. Participants attend dance performances and learn diverse dance styles, such as African dance, Bollywood, and contact improvisation, from professional artists. Collaborating on everything from music choice to choreography, students create an entirely original dance piece and perform their work at the BAM Fisher.  No previous dance or choreographic experience is required. All students must submit an application and complete an interview in order to be considered for the program.

Dream Catchers Afterschool Workshops

“Dream Catchers” is a series of 14 week workshops, led by Cheryl Paley and Ruthie Azarch. For the past 23 years Ms. Paley has directed theatre for social change and created and facilitated workshops for young people, using the arts as a prevention tool. Ruthie Azarch is a visual artist who has created workshops and businesses around utilizing art as a transformational tool. Groups of 10 – 15 young people between the ages of 13 and 21 will meet and engage in journal writing, poetry and drama workshops, visual arts, improvisation and a host of arts-based techniques as a springboard for personal growth and exploration and a forum for group discussion on issues relevant to their daily lives. At the end of each 14 week session, participants will create and present their own final project for an invited audience. The boys group will meet on Mondays from 4 – 6pm and the girls group will meet on Wednesdays from 4:30 – 6:30. Taking this kind of course work has many benefits. Not only can the credits you earn transfer to whichever college you eventually attend, but taking this kind of coursework in high school makes you a more appealing candidate for selective colleges and universities and many scholarship programs. it is also a great way to hone your skills and work habits in preparation for college.
Students who are candidates for employment, varsity sports, or after school programs should NOT apply. FAXED applications will NOT be accepted. 9th and 10th grade students are ineligible for the program.

This is your opportunity to visit the hospital and participate in an interactive program designed to give students a complete understanding of the man careers in this rapidly growing industry! You will have the opportunity to speak with professionals in radiology medicine, emergency medicine, health care security, nursing, and much more! Come and see if a career in this growing industry is right for you.

Educational Alliance Teen Center 
Since our inception in 2005, the Educational Alliance Teen Center (known affectionately as “Edgies Teen Center” or “Edgies” for short) has quickly become a hugely successful center for teens who live or go to school on or near the Lower East Side. We offer a variety of activities in a healthy, safe, and fun environment – all free of charge to members. Activities include cooking and nutrition classes, sports, arts, College Prep, and discussion groups. The College Prep program includes SAT classes, college advisement, financial aid / scholarship support, college application support, college visits, essay writing guidance, and an early college awareness program for 9th and 10th grade students. UpBeat NYC

UpBeat NYC uses the pursuit of musical excellence and ensemble performance to bring about positive change in the lives of children in the South Bronx. UpBeat offers an orchestra program for children 8 through 21 years of age. Students enrolled in the orchestra program receive instruction on a string, woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument three or more days per week. Classes include private lessons, group lessons, and ensemble rehearsals. Eligible students will reside in the South Bronx, typically in the Mott Haven section, and will be able to make a commitment to attending at least 3 days of classes per week after school. Instruments are provided on loan free of charge, and there is no cost to participate in the program. There is currently a waiting list for acceptance into this program, so interested students should apply now! New York Public Library: Innovation Labs Apply Now!
Innovation Labs (IL), a new program of the New York Public Library (NYPL), is an interdisciplinary program about critical engagement with the world around us. Using blogging, podcasti0ng, and video game design, participants will observe, investigate, and assess issues pertaining to the spaces and situations with which they interact every day. Participants will hone their research, analysis, and presentation skills as they refine the critical thinking that is essential to the Common Core Standards. They will become producers of informational media rather than consumers, and be able to express their opinions about and solutions to issues that matter to them.

Program Details:
 Located at 3 sites: Columbus Library (10th Ave. and 50th Street); St. George Library (by the Staten Island Ferry Terminal in Staten Island); Bronx Library Center (Fordham Section of the Bronx)
 Each site will host two cohorts of up to 25 students. One cohort will attend the program on Mondays and Wednesdays; the other on Tuesdays and Thursdays; Fridays are open days for trips, special projects, and guest speakers
 Enrollment is open to students in grades 7 through 10
 Enrollment is ongoing until the 25 slots per cohort are filled
 Each program meeting lasts from 3:30-6:00pm
 Program sessions will include time for students to complete their school homework, as well as completion of IL work

We will be assessing student mastery of our learning technologies and communication platforms through a series of digital badges, which are awarded after successful completion of a task or assignment. Think of digital badging as similar to acquiring a Girl Scout or Boy Scout badge, except they exist in the digital realm. Mozilla Backpack is the platform that we will use to track badging. Badges will be awarded for skills like writing a coherent blog post and sharing it with three other individuals (hard skills) but also for being able to collaborate i0n a group, provide constructive feedback on another’s work, overall attendance and participation, and other “soft” skills. NYC CollegeLine Fall Contest Deadline: November 30th
NYC CollegeLine (www.nyccollegeline.org) is running a contest through November 30th for New York City High School students! Students are encouraged to submit either a short story (400-500 words) or a poem (21-32 lines) responding to one of the following prompts: 

 As a high school student, how will attending college help you to achieve your dreams and aspirations? 

 Tell us about a time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you? What lesson did you learn?

THE DOOR'S THIS WAY AHEAD (TWA) PROGRAM
TWA is a retail internship opportunity with the Gap / Old Navy stores.
In order to apply participants must:

·        Attend a NYC GED, High School or College

·        Be 16-21 years of age (Must be 16 by April 16, 2014)

·        Have proper documentation (SS Card, Proof of Age, Authorization to Work, and Proof in school)

·        Willing to make a 9 month COMMITMENT to the TWA Program

During the 4 months of Career Exploration and Job Readiness training (February to May) Gap Inc. The Ventures Scholars Program is a national nonprofit membership program designed to promote access to higher education for young adults interested in pursuing math- and science-based careers. The Ventures Scholars Program targets high achieving underrepresented students and first-generation college-bound students and invites them to join the Ventures Scholars Program. New York City Science and Engineering Fair

The New York City Science and Engineering Fair (NYCSEF) is the city’s largest research competition for high school students. This is an exceptional opportunity for students to engage in the research process, share their research with peers and scientists from around the city, and compete for a variety of prizes, including an all-expense paid trip to represent NYC at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair in May. The Cooper Union School of Art: Outreach Program, On-Site Interview

The Outreach Pre-College Program accepts high school students who live in New York City and surrounding areas, in grades 10-12, and who are enrolled in either a public or private high school. Each seasonal program is designed for a specific grade level. Please refer to the calendar for complete portfolio review dates and grade eligibility for each session. In order to apply, students must come to campus to be interviewed in person. If you are unable to come to the portfolio review at the scheduled time, please contact the office before the review date to set up an individual appointment. (The office IS open Monday- Wednesday, 9-5pm. The office is NOT open Thursday or Friday.) Each season has a separate application and portfolio review date. Please refer to the schedule and eligibility requirements to make sure that you are applying for the correct session. 

IMPORTANT INFO and FAQ: 

 The Portfolio Review is held at 41 Cooper Square, 1st Floor (7th Street @ 3rd Avenue). 

 The reviews run from 10am to approximately 2pm. 

 Arrive according to your last name: 

o A-M: 10am-12pm 

o N-Z: 12pm-2pm. 

 Your portfolio should include 10-20 original artworks (you may include proper documentation for artworks too big or unable to be brought in person)...As well as any sketchbooks, to include drawing from observation. 

 Artwork for the portfolio does NOT need to be matted.

Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute
Open to: 11th and 12th grade high school students of all Hispanic descent

Applications for the 2014 Angelo del Toro Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute (PR/HYLY) program are now available onlinehttps://www.surveymonkey.com/s/PRHYLI2014 . *The institute begins in January and is open to juniors and seniors of any Hispanic background. The program provides students with the opportunity to learn how a bill is passed in the State Assembly; it culminates in a weekend trip to Albany. Students also learn resume writing, debating, and leadership skills. Please urge all eligible students to participate in this exceptional program. Applicants must submit a 400-word essay on a historic example of bullying and how they, as Hispanic/Latino leaders, can take active roles in ending bullying in their schools and communities. C-Span's StudentCam Deadline: January 20th
StudentCam is C-SPAN’s annual national video documentary competition that encourages students to think critically about issues that affect our communities and our nation. The 2014 theme is “A Message to the U.S. Congress: What’s the most important issue the U.S. Congress should consider in 2014?” The competition is open to all students in grades 6-12, divided into middle school and high school categories. The grand prize is a $5,000 award for the student(s) and $750 for the school to spend on digital video equipment. Runners up will receive lesser prizes. The deadline to apply is January 20th. Emma L. Bowen Foundation

The Emma L. Bowen Foundation was created in 1989 to prepare minority youth for careers in the media industry. The Foundation’s program is unlike traditional intern programs in that students work for partner companies during summers and school breaks from the summer following their senior year in high school until they graduate from college. During the four-year program, students have an opportunity to learn many aspects of corporate operations and develop company-specific skills. Corporations have an opportunity to train and mentor students with the option of full-time employment upon completion of their college degrees. Students can earn hourly salary and matching scholarship funds for college expenses. Academic excellence is a key component of the program – students are required to maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average to remain in good standing. The Foundation staff works closely with corporate partners to monitor each student’s academic work and progress. An annual summer conference, a mentoring program, and a technical program are also provided to further enhance the student’s knowledge and experience.
Eligibility Requirements: Any minority student (African American, Hispanic, Asian or Native American) who is a graduating high school senior or college freshman, has a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0, is interested in pursuing a career in the media industry, and plans to attend a four-year accredited college or university is eligible to apply to the Emma L. Bowen Foundation work/study program. Eligible applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal residents of the United States, and speak and write English fluently to be considered. Your grade transcript, at least two educational references from teachers and/or advisors, and a 500-to-1,000 word essay must accompany the application form.

New York City Housing Authority Digital Vans Ongoing
New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) offers Digital Vans – free computer labs on wheels for NYCHA residents and other community members to link up to the Internet, search for job opportunities, or touch up resumes. The vans travel around the city, stopping in areas that have limited or no access to broadband high-speed internet service. Its eight laptop computers have wireless Internet access and connect to printers. WiFi also allows people with their own laptops to be outside the van and access the Internet for free. New York Botanical Garden: Explainers Program

Want to have an exciting internship and get paid for it? The Explainers Program offered by the New York Botanical Garden offers a unique experience to high school students ages 14 – 17. Explainers facilitate experiences with nature and plant science for children and families. Using seasonal lessons and explorations of the garden, Explainers prepare children to use their senses as tools for exploring the garden. Explainers rotate through activity stations that are located both outside in the garden and inside the Discovery Center. They commit to a minimum of 125 training and volunteer hours.
