DIIT Internship Program (Juniors!)
Deadline: November 12 
UAG has been selected to participate in the DIIT Internship Program, established as a partnership between the Work-Based Learning Resource Center and the NYC Department of Education's Division of Instructional and Information Technology (DIIT).

The program takes Junior and Senior high school students from selected CTE schools and places them in part-time, paid internships with various teams in the DIIT. The interns also participate in bimonthly seminars and showcase what they learned in a final project that is presented to supervisors and representatives from their school. *If you are participating in an extended day program, sport or extracurricular program which currently requires afterschool commitment, this may not be the internship for you.*

Exploring: Smart Technologies

Join the Exploring Program at Smart Technologies, the creator of the SMART Board. More than two million SMART Board interactive whiteboards are used by over 40 million students and their teachers. The Black Man Can Institute Register Now!
The Black Man Can Institute is a one day series of workshops designed to uplift, empower, educate, and motivate young men of color. Educational Alliance Teen Center
Since our inception in 2005, the Educational Alliance Teen Center (known affectionately as “Edgies Teen Center” or “Edgies” for short) has quickly become a hugely successful center for teens who live or go to school on or near the Lower East Side. We offer a variety of activities in a healthy, safe, and fun environment – all free of charge to members. Activities include cooking and nutrition classes, sports, arts, College Prep, and discussion groups. The College Prep program includes SAT classes, college advisement, financial aid / scholarship support, college application support, college visits, essay writing guidance, and an early college awareness program for 9th and 10th grade students. Future ImageMakers Program at NYU (FREE!)

This workshop, mentored by Tisch Professors and advanced NYU Photography students, offers free digital photography classes to talented and highly motivated high school imagemakers. Designed to support and enhance their current training, participants will engage in many of the components that comprise the digital image-making curriculum of the BFA program at Tisch Photography and Imaging. Cameras and supplies are provided. Fifteen to twenty young artists will be selected to participate in this free program which is held either on Saturdays or two afternoons during the week from 4-6 from February to May. Applicants, in their freshmen, sophomore, and junior year, from the five boroughs of New York City as well as from Westchester County, Long Island, New Jersey and Connecticut and Philadelphia are encouraged to apply. 
Who should apply for this program?  
Students who are in their freshman, sophomore or junior years of high school who imagine that they will be a Future Imagemaker should apply. Because the program involves travel to Greenwich Village, students of the Saturday program will most likely live in cities and towns within 2 hours of New York, while students of the Monday/Thursday program will most likely live within the 5 boroughs or a 30-minute commuting distance.

What is the schedule for the 2014 program?
The program runs in two different sessions: 12 Saturdays from 10 am until 4 pm OR Mondays and Thursdays from 4-6pm. Our Monday/Thursday program runs weekly from February 6 to May 9. Our Saturday program takes place weekly from February 1 to May 10.

What are the costs of the program? 
Future Imagemakers is tuition-free. Equipment is provided. Students will need to arrange their own transportation to and from class meetings and workshops, as well as any lunch or afternoon snacks.

UpBeat NYC

UpBeat NYC uses the pursuit of musical excellence and ensemble performance to bring about positive change in the lives of children in the South Bronx. UpBeat offers an orchestra program for children 8 through 21 years of age. Students enrolled in the orchestra program receive instruction on a string, woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument three or more days per week. Classes include private lessons, group lessons, and ensemble rehearsals. Eligible students will reside in the South Bronx, typically in the Mott Haven section, and will be able to make a commitment to attending at least 3 days of classes per week after school. Instruments are provided on loan free of charge, and there is no cost to participate in the program. There is currently a waiting list for acceptance into this program, so interested students should apply now! New York Public Library: Innovation Labs Apply Now!
Innovation Labs (IL), a new program of the New York Public Library (NYPL), is an interdisciplinary program about critical engagement with the world around us. Using blogging, podcasti0ng, and video game design, participants will observe, investigate, and assess issues pertaining to the spaces and situations with which they interact every day. Participants will hone their research, analysis, and presentation skills as they refine the critical thinking that is essential to the Common Core Standards. They will become producers of informational media rather than consumers, and be able to express their opinions about and solutions to issues that matter to them.

Program Details:
 Located at 3 sites: Columbus Library (10th Ave. and 50th Street); St. George Library (by the Staten Island Ferry Terminal in Staten Island); Bronx Library Center (Fordham Section of the Bronx)
 Each site will host two cohorts of up to 25 students. One cohort will attend the program on Mondays and Wednesdays; the other on Tuesdays and Thursdays; Fridays are open days for trips, special projects, and guest speakers
 Enrollment is open to students in grades 7 through 10
 Enrollment is ongoing until the 25 slots per cohort are filled
 Each program meeting lasts from 3:30-6:00pm
 Program sessions will include time for students to complete their school homework, as well as completion of IL work

We will be assessing student mastery of our learning technologies and communication platforms through a series of digital badges, which are awarded after successful completion of a task or assignment. Think of digital badging as similar to acquiring a Girl Scout or Boy Scout badge, except they exist in the digital realm. Mozilla Backpack is the platform that we will use to track badging. Badges will be awarded for skills like writing a coherent blog post and sharing it with three other individuals (hard skills) but also for being able to collaborate i0n a group, provide constructive feedback on another’s work, overall attendance and participation, and other “soft” skills. All Star Code: Design a Startup in a Day November 23, 2013
All Star Code (ASC) is a new non-profit initiative that seeks to attract, prepare, and place high-potential, qualified young Black men in the tech-career pipeline and help them achieve full-time employment at technology companies early in their careers. We are dedicated to closing the systemic opportunity gap between young Black men and the tech industry. ASC is thrilled to announce our second Fall Workshop at General Assembly. On Saturday, November 23, 2013, students will come to General Assembly (GA) and learn to “wireframe” a mock startup company, tour the GA facilities in the Flatiron district, meet mentors who are active technology professionals, and learn more about our upcoming summer program. This program is for creative Black males, ages 14-17, who are curious about tech, coding, and startups. generationOn: Family Fundraiser Event

generationOn is the global youth service movement igniting the power of all kids and teens to make their mark on the world. Our annual Family Fundraiser service event brings together parents, teachers, and students from NYC schools around the five boroughs to engage in various service projects. This year's event will be held at MS 260 (281 Park Avenue South, 6th Floor) on Saturday, November 23, from 10 am until 12:30 pm. The program will offer opportunities to engage in various hands-on service projects, including projects that address the environment, animal welfare, the visually impaired, community food programs, and others. We would like to provide live music at the Family Fundraiser event, preferably classical music or jazz. We are looking for middle or high school students who play in a small group or band, and willing to volunteer to play from 10 am until 12:30 pm at our event. No training is needed. New York City Science and Engineering Fair

The New York City Science and Engineering Fair (NYCSEF) is the city’s largest research competition for high school students. This is an exceptional opportunity for students to engage in the research process, share their research with peers and scientists from around the city, and compete for a variety of prizes, including an all-expense paid trip to represent NYC at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair in May. Competitive science projects require students to develop essential literacy, numeracy, critical thinking, and communication skills – skills highlighted throughout the Common Core State Standards. The Cooper Union School of Art: Outreach Program, On-Site Interview

The Outreach Pre-College Program accepts high school students who live in New York City and surrounding areas, in grades 10-12, and who are enrolled in either a public or private high school. Each seasonal program is designed for a specific grade level. Please refer to the calendar for complete portfolio review dates and grade eligibility for each session. In order to apply, students must come to campus to be interviewed in person. If you are unable to come to the portfolio review at the scheduled time, please contact the office before the review date to set up an individual appointment. (The office IS open Monday- Wednesday, 9-5pm. The office is NOT open Thursday or Friday.) Each season has a separate application and portfolio review date. Please refer to the schedule and eligibility requirements to make sure that you are applying for the correct session.


 The Portfolio Review is held at 41 Cooper Square, 1st Floor (7th Street @ 3rd Avenue).

 The reviews run from 10am to approximately 2pm.

 Arrive according to your last name:

 Your portfolio should include 10-20 original artworks (you may include proper documentation for artworks too big or unable to be brought in person)...As well as any sketchbooks, to include drawing from observation.

The program provides students with the opportunity to learn how a bill is passed in the State Assembly; it culminates in a weekend trip to Albany. Students also learn resume writing, debating, and leadership skills. Please urge all eligible students to participate in this exceptional program. Applicants must submit a 400-word essay on a historic example of bullying and how they, as Hispanic/Latino leaders, can take active roles in ending bullying in their schools and communities. C-Span's StudentCam Deadline: January 20th
StudentCam is C-SPAN’s annual national video documentary competition that encourages students to think critically about issues that affect our communities and our nation. The 2014 theme is “A Message to the U.S. Congress: What’s the most important issue the U.S. Congress should consider in 2014?” The competition is open to all students in grades 6-12, divided into middle school and high school categories. The grand prize is a $5,000 award for the student(s) and $750 for the school to spend on digital video equipment. Runners up will receive lesser prizes. The deadline to apply is January 20th. Emma L. Bowen Foundation

The Emma L. Bowen Foundation was created in 1989 to prepare minority youth for careers in the media industry. The Foundation’s program is unlike traditional intern programs in that students work for partner companies during summers and school breaks from the summer following their senior year in high school until they graduate from college. During the four-year program, students have an opportunity to learn many aspects of corporate operations and develop company-specific skills. Corporations have an opportunity to train and mentor students with the option of full-time employment upon completion of their college degrees. Students can earn hourly salary and matching scholarship funds for college expenses. Academic excellence is a key component of the program – students are required to maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average to remain in good standing. The Foundation staff works closely with corporate partners to monitor each student’s academic work and progress. An annual summer conference, a mentoring program, and a technical program are also provided to further enhance the student’s knowledge and experience.
Eligibility Requirements: Any minority student (African American, Hispanic, Asian or Native American) who is a graduating high school senior or college freshman, has a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0, is interested in pursuing a career in the media industry, and plans to attend a four-year accredited college or university is eligible to apply to the Emma L. Bowen Foundation work/study program. Eligible applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal residents of the United States, and speak and write English fluently to be considered. Your grade transcript, at least two educational references from teachers and/or advisors, and a 500-to-1,000 word essay must accompany the application form.

New York City Housing Authority Digital Vans Ongoing
New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) offers Digital Vans – free computer labs on wheels for NYCHA residents and other community members to link up to the Internet, search for job opportunities, or touch up resumes. The vans travel around the city, stopping in areas that have limited or no access to broadband high-speed internet service. Its eight laptop computers have wireless Internet access and connect to printers. WiFi also allows people with their own laptops to be outside the van and access the Internet for free. New York Botanical Garden: Explainers Program

Want to have an exciting internship and get paid for it? The Explainers Program offered by the New York Botanical Garden offers a unique experience to high school students ages 14 – 17. Explainers facilitate experiences with nature and plant science for children and families. Using seasonal lessons and explorations of the garden, Explainers prepare children to use their senses as tools for exploring the garden. Explainers rotate through activity stations that are located both outside in the garden and inside the Discovery Center. They commit to a minimum of 125 training and volunteer hours.
