Gravity Design Challenge Build Time

5:00 PM - 7:00 PM EDT at Iridescent Studio, 890 Garrison Ave., Bronx


 Iridescent will be running a Gravity Design Challenge (http://www.curiositymachine.org/index.php?r=activity/view&id=312) through our Curiosity Machine website. We will have an open studio building session on August 27th from 5:00-7:00 pm for kids ages 13-18 to work on their design submissions.
We have developed the Gravity Design Challenge in partnership with Warner Bros. around their new movie Gravity. The three winners of this challenge will get a ticket to the movie premiere in New York and a chance to rub shoulders with the movie’s stars: George Clooney and Sandra Bullock.

To enter the contest, students need to build at least three components for a Rube Goldberg space mission: a launch mechanism, and orbit transfer mechanism, and a gravity well that simulates the orbit.

Tutor for TEP Charter School

TEP is actively seeking outstanding middle school math and reading tutors to work with a carefully selected group of our 5th through 8th grade students.  All tutoring happens at TEP, Monday-Thursday, from 4-5PM, and we provide necessary training, materials, and ongoing support. We pay tutors $15/hour (although we also accept volunteers).

CAT Youth Theater

Description: The Creative Arts Team Youth Theatre is divided into three companies: the Youth Theatre (high school), the Junior Youth Theatre (middle school), and the Ensemble (a training and performing company of former Youth Theatre members aged 18-25). Each company consists of members from the five boroughs of New York City, who meet weekly, after school, from September through May to explore their ideas and creativity and to build their skills through theatre games and exercises, improvisations and scene work, rehearsal, critical reflection and group discussion. There is no audition: students are admitted on a first- come first-served basis. New members are admitted each semester. Under the dynamic facilitation and direction of CAT's staff of theatre professionals, the Youth Theatre companies create and perform a number of shows each year. These many and varied experiences broaden students' horizons, help them to develop a wide range of personal and interpersonal skills, and offer them powerful experience of building, and being part of, a special community.

Figure Skating in Harlem

Description: Figure Skating in Harlem asks students to make a commitment to themselves and the program. Girls who participate in FSH sign a Skater's Contract and are responsible for maintaining at least a B average in school. The organization has two core components which are our off-ice education and character development classes and on-ice skating instruction and performance. Equipped with proper skating equipment and team attire and supported by a staff of more than 35 educators and skating instructors, students attend FSH a minimum of six hours per week throughout the school year. Some students attend additional weekend sessions and modified spring and summer programs.

TADA Youth Theater: Ensemble Program
Deadline: Acceptance is based on audition. Auditions are by appointment only starting early September.
Description: TADA!'s mission is to offer any NYC child, with an interest or talent in theater, the opportunity to partake in professionally directed productions, staged readings, in-school/after-school arts education programs, and classes. TADA! kids develop their imagination, talent, self-esteem, concentration, discipline, teamwork, public speaking ability and vocabulary in a fun, safe and stimulating environment. TADA!'s Resident Youth Ensemble Program is made up of children and youth ages 8-18, who come together from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds to create a joyful theater experience through main stage productions and new play development. The Ensemble nurtures musical theater talents, fosters positive youth development and self-esteem, offers community service opportunities and supports academic achievement, as well as college and career preparation. Program Activities include: Free Audition Preparation Assistance for High School, College, or Professional Companies, Free Tickets to Broadway, Off- Broadway, and Other New York Shows, Industry Panels and Guest Artists, College Assistance, Mentoring, Performance Opportunities.
Program Dates: Wednesdays through Fridays after school (4-7 p.m.) and Saturday and Sunday afternoons (11 a.m.-6 p.m.). The majority of our winter & spring performances are on Friday evenings and during the weekend. In the summer, performances take place during the week.

Brooklyn Academy of Music: Ushers Program

Description: Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), an internationally recognized presenter of contemporary performing arts and cinema, seeks friendly, polite and enthusiastic people to work part-time as Theater Ushers for main stage performances. Ushers help theater-goers to their seats, hand out programs, and answer questions. No experience is necessary; just be friendly and polite. The pay is $30 per performance. Pratt Institute: Design Initiative for Community Empowerment (DICE)

Description: The Design Initiative for Community Empowerment (DICE) is a design program for NYC public high school students offered by Pratt Institute. It provides students with a supportive and professional environment to explore the field of design. These after school classes include field trips, guest speakers from the NYC design community, portfolio development, and an end of year exhibit of your work. Each class explores design from a local perspective - as a means of problem solving and change within one's community. Classes are offered in textile/fashion, digital design, and product design. DICE students come from selected local high schools and are recommended by their art teachers or school administrators. Students are encouraged to participate yearlong, and new students are welcome to join in the spring. Program Dates: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30-6:30.

Brooklyn Museum: Museum Apprentices Program

Description: The work-study program invites serious and mature high school students to combine learning and teaching. Work-study students attend a Gallery/Studio Program teen course free of charge, in exchange for assisting teaching artists in classes for students ages six through twelve. Responsibilities include preparing supplies, helping maintain order in the classroom, and working with students one-on- one. Work-study students are also required to attend an orientation meeting at the beginning and a reflection meeting after it ends. Classes in the past have included portfolio development, digital photography, drawing the human figure, silkscreen printmaking, and Pop art.

Brooklyn Museum: Teen Night Events Planning Committee Internship

Description: The Teen Night Events Planning Committee plans, promotes, and produces Teen Nights; thematic events held one Friday a month for teens in the museum setting. The Teen Night Planning Committee internship is open to all high school students and runs from November to May. Work meetings are held two or three Wednesdays a month from 5 to 7 pm helping maintain order in the classroom, and working with the students on a one-to-one basis.

American Museum of Natural History

The After School Program (ASP) offers courses to New York City high school students interested in the sciences. There are courses in anthropology, astrophysics, earth science, genetics, biodiversity, and more. Each course makes use of the Museum's unique resources through hall visits, lab and collections tours, talks and lectures by scientists, and hands-on activities. ASP offers multiple sessions throughout the school year. Each session is six weeks long, and courses meet once or twice a week from 4:30 - 6:30 PM.

Pratt Institute: Saturday Art School

Description: Since 1897, Pratt Institute’s Saturday Art School has been offering a broad range of classes for children, adolescents, pre-schoolers, and adults. Saturday Art School students are encouraged to explore a variety of media, techniques, and approaches. This program continues to validate our belief that it is never too early or too late for children and adults to develop their potential as creative individuals. Saturday Art School is a teaching laboratory; most classes are taught by education students who are supervised by Pratt faculty. Boy’s Club of New York: Make it Happen College Access Program

Description: Make it Happen! is an evidence-based college access and success program that supports participants to aspire to attend a college or career school, and offers them the tools to become strong candidates for admission and graduation. By creating and maintaining a portfolio of ―future-mapping‖ activities, participants envision, research, plan for, and work towards their goals. The curriculum is divided into three stages: Ready, focused on knowledge, aspirations and goal-setting; Set, building on earlier work and identified needs to support academic achievement, secure letters of recommendation, make a short list of schools and create a financing strategy; and Go, offering guidance through the application and financial aid processes—and beyond, to support alumni in post-secondary programs.

ICP Teen Academy Imagemakers

Description: Teen Academy Imagemakers enables motivated high school juniors and seniors to advance their photography skills and develop an awareness of the creative and professional possibilities in the field. This yearlong, weekly program provides students with guidance from some of New York's best teaching artists; field trips to museums, galleries, and studios; college-prep workshops; pre-professional assignments; mentorship opportunities in the field; and full access to ICP's facilities. The curriculum provides in-depth study of photography genres, including self-portraiture, documentary, photojournalism, personal vision, fashion, and studio work. All aspects of the curriculum are intended to encourage and inspire the students to further express and strengthen their artistic voices. At the completion of the program, students have created an extensive portfolio, including an artist's statement and resume, and are honored in a gallery exhibition. This program is best suited for students looking to pursue photography further in college or in their future.

High 5: Teen Reviewers and Critics (TRaC) Program

High 5's Teen Reviewers and Critics (TRaC) Program gives select sophomores, juniors and seniors in high school the opportunity to attend cutting edge theater, music events, dance performances, museums and a host of art galleries with a group of like-minded peers (read: open, adventurous, motivated) from all over NYC and NJ. Learn the art of discussion, experience the thrill of publication and master the ins and outs of the NYC subway system, all while improving your writing skills and tapping into all the arts NYC has to offer. Citizens' Committee for Children: Youth Action NYC Community Leadership Course

Description: The YouthAction NYC Community Leadership Course (YCLC) is offered to youth interested in affecting positive change in their communities and becoming empowered advocates for children, youth, and families. CCC's YouthAction NYC engages youth in learning the value of civic participation by practicing skills such as public speaking, written communication, and effective critical debate. Students attend weekly afternoon sessions for 10 weeks. Program activities include street polling, interviews with influential elected officials and community leaders, and visits to important community organizations. The process culminates with participants formulating policy recommendations and presenting them to community members and policy makers.

NYU High School Law Institute

Description: The program which is run and taught by NYU and Columbia law students is designed to introduce New York City area high school students to the basics of American law as well as to introduce students to many law-related careers. The weekly program runs from October to April. Students will come to one of the law schools each Saturday and participate in hands-on classes in criminal and constitutional law as well as a class in which students will prepare to argue a mock trial at the end of the year. Additionally, one Saturday will be a "college day" geared toward answering students' and parents' questions about selecting and applying to college.

Cooper Union: Portfolio Preparation Class

Description: High school seniors (12th grade) are eligible for the Portfolio Preparation Class. This year-long (2 semester) studio course is designed to prepare for admission to Art and Architecture colleges. Cooper Union: Saturday Program

Description: Each year over 200 NYC public high school students enroll in Saturday Program for classes in: Drawing, Graphic Design, Painting, Sculpture, Sound Composition, Architecture and Portfolio Preparation. Courses run Saturdays, 10am-5pm for 2 semesters, October through April and are held at the Cooper Union College. All classes combine 'hands on' studio work (with free classroom supplies included) also creative writing workshops and field trips to cultural sites.

Macho: The Youth Leadership Program (YLP)

Description: The Youth Leadership Program (YLP) is an anti-oppressive community program that harnesses the shared power of youth leaders and youth allies to organize around health justice in East Harlem. Through experiential workshops, youth-driven projects, campaigns, and events, we support youth in taking action on community health topics they are passionate about. YLP is part of Motivating Action through Community Health Outreach (MAChO), a volunteer organization based out of Weill Cornell Medical College's Community Service Office. MET Museum Internship Program

Whitney Museum: Youth Insights Artists or Writers Programs

Description: Youth Insights is a semester or year-long program for NYC High School Students at the Whitney Museum of American Art that deepens understanding through artistic experiences. The program is devoted to collaborative work with peers and artists, an engagement with the creative process, community service, and nurturing a culture of critical thinking. While we will explore art history and art-making, no prior knowledge of either is necessary. Over the year, 16 high school students work to engage diverse audiences in thinking about and making art.
Program Dates: One semester. YI Writers meet on Tuesday afternoons from 4–6:30 pm; YI Artists meet on Wednesday afternoons from 4–6:30 pm.

Whitney Museum: Youth Insights LEADERS Program

Description: Graduates of the Youth Insights Artists and Writers programs are eligible to participate in YI Leaders, a yearlong, paid after-school internship. YI Leaders is an opportunity to gain experience working in a museum education department and to serve as an ambassador to your community. Applicants should be prepared to work 3–10 hours per week. YI Leaders: Organize public programs and events for other teens from around the city, from artist’s talks to hands-on workshops; Learn to develop and lead interactive tours of the Whitney’s collection and exhibitions; Assist educators in the Whitney’s Family and Community education programs; Develop online interpretive materials and maintain the Whitney’s teen blog.

New York Association of Black Journalists: First Take NYC

Description: The New York Association of Black Journalists’ ―First Take‖ Program is for talented high school students from the New York City area with a strong interest in ―multiplatform journalism‖ which means writing & reporting for newspapers and websites, shooting & editing photo and video for the web and television, plus producing packages for broadcast and webcasts. Instructors include journalists from The Associated Press, The New York Times, and WABC-TV and more. Students get hands-on experience with equipment, websites, and a television studio. Students will also visit a working newsroom and learn from guest speakers at the top of their craft. Students who graduate from the program will be presented with a certificate during a brunch ceremony attended by mentors and family members, and receive a copy of their work. The workshop is held every fall, every Saturday during October through mid-November from 9am to 4pm at the Brooklyn campus of Long Island University.

New York Botanical Garden: Fall Explainer Program
Deadline: September 21, 2013 - applications are due before midnight. Open house at 2:00p.m.
Description: This opportunity allows teenagers to explore plants, nature, and science through mentoring and working with children in the Botanical Gardens. Explainers facilitate experiences with nature and plant science for children and families. Using seasonal lessons and explorations of the garden, Explainers prepare children to use their senses as tools for exploring the garden. Explainers rotate through activity stations that are located both outside in the garden and inside the Discovery Center. They commit to a minimum of 125 training and volunteer hours.
Program Dates: During the fall semester, Explainers volunteer on weekends and optional school holidays. Weekend shifts last 4.5 hours in either the morning or afternoon.

Fashion Institute of Technology - Precollege Summer/Saturday/Sunday Live Program
Deadline: September 21st
New York City high school aged residents enrolled in a NYC DOE high school may be eligible for a financial assistance scholarship.  This partial scholarship covers $250 (the total cost of one course is $308). Scholarship recipients are responsible for the remaining $58 balance and any supplies required for the class (most courses require supplies that students must purchase. The estimated cost of supplies should not exceed $50, except for Introduction to Photography with an estimated cost of supplies at $130.)

We will be selecting recipients based on the criteria below. The deadline to submit for the Fall Saturday/Sunday Live 2013 semester is September 21, 2013.

The Possibility Project
Deadline: Need to audition for acceptance. Auditions will be held Sept. 21, Sept. 28, and Oct. 5th
Description: The Possibility Project brings together vastly diverse groups of teenagers who meet weekly for a year. Through a combination of issue-oriented discussions, trainings in diversity, conflict resolution, leadership and community activism, instruction in the full range of performing arts, and the creation of scenes and writing, the youth cast writes, produces and performs an original musical based on their lives and their ideas for change. In addition, they design and lead community action projects on issues of concern to them in order to take their creative vision for change into the world. Through the program, our young people develop skills in cross-cultural understanding, non-violent conflict resolution, leadership, community responsibility, self-efficacy, and the performing arts and achieve academic advancement. Our aim is to increase the confidence and independence of teenagers as they move into adulthood, and to create the next generation of creative leadership that is capable of unifying our diverse populations to resolve the most pressing social issues that we face.

Brooklyn Academy of Music: Arts & Justice

Description: Arts & Justice is a unique interdisciplinary visual and performing arts program that encourages students to develop their artistic, decision-making, and critical-thinking skills in examining issues related to social justice in their communities. Students can choose to participate in one of two parallel tracks taught by master instructors: theater, which explores the fundamentals of writing and performing for the stage; and visual Arts, which offers instruction in the fine arts and creation of visual works for public exhibition as a positive, community-centered outlet. Students attend live performances and visit art galleries and both tracks will culminate in an informal performance and exhibition in December.

DYCD: In School Youth Program

Description: The In School Youth Employment program provides year round services for at risk high school juniors and seniors who come from low income households. The goals of the ISY program are to ensure that participants graduate from high school, pursue college education, and develop career goals. The Program includes guidance and counseling services, paid internship opportunities and involvement in the Summer Work Program, tutoring, college preparation and out-of-city college trips, project-based leadership activities, sports, arts, technology and recreation activities.

Noguchi Museum: Teen Advisory Board (TAB)

Description: The Noguchi Museum offers up to 15 high school students a school-year-long internship as members of The Museum's Teen Advisory Board (TAB). TAB interns learn about the Museum, gain an understanding of the different departments and concerns of an art museum, plan programs for other teens, create collaborative projects, and advise the Museum staff on teen-related matters.
Program Dates: Mid October through late May - meets every Wednesday from 4:30pm to 6:30pm.

MCC Theater: Youth Company
Deadline: Late September - Early October
Description: The MCC Theater Youth Company is a free, after-school program for NYC high school students interested in developing their acting and dramatic writing skills. Within a creative, challenging, and supportive environment, teenagers from all five boroughs participate in weekly workshops (Labs) led by professional theater artists. Students work together to create and perform original work. The Youth Company is split into two distinct groups: the Acting Lab and the Playwriting Lab. Acting Lab students meet Tuesdays with professional director Stephen DiMenna to develop skills in voice, movement, monologue and dialogue, culminating with the annual spring production. Playwriting Lab students meet Mondays with professional playwright Lucy Thurber to develop skills in dramatic writing. In the fall, students collaboratively write a play which is performed by Acting Lab members in February. In the spring, students write individual short plays, the best of which are produced by professional actors and directors in August during The FreshPlay Festival. In order to enroll, students must attend a mandatory two-part orientation in late September/early October.

Sadie Nash Leadership Project: Leadership Institute

Description: Sadie Nash Leadership Project (SNLP) was founded in 2001 to promote leadership and activism among young women. The Program is designed to strengthen, empower, and equip young women as agents of change in their world. By increasing the participation of women in social, political, and economic decision-making, SNLP seeks to question and redefine the nature of leadership and to promote perspectives and practices that are cooperative, accountable, ethical, and effective. Leadership Institute is a program at SNLP where young women can take classes in leadership development and skill building. Program Dates: October through May

New Settlement Bronx Helpers

Description: New Settlement's Bronx Helpers is a youth leadership and community service program that promotes empowerment through youth voice, leadership development and academic enrichment with a focus on social justice. The program boasts success in many areas and one of the most important is that Bronx Helpers evaluate the program as one that authentically recognizes youth as partners to community leaders in sustaining long-term, positive community change.

Brownsville Youth Court Program

Description: The Brownsville Youth Court trains teenagers 14-18 to serve as advocates, jurors and judges. Members hear real-life cases of other teens that have committed low-level offenses, serve their communities by helping other teens, and learn about the justice system, public speaking skills and how to be a leader. In addition, Brownsville Youth Court members participate in a wide range of group activities, such as field trips to City Hall, professional development activities, fund-raising events, community service projects and social activities like game night. All Brownsville Youth Court members first go through a month-long training program in which they learn about the justice system, how youth court works, and how to serve as judge, advocate, bailiff and jury. They learn how to work together as a team. Every youth who successfully completes the training program can become a full member of the Brownsville Youth Court. Program Dates: TBD

Exploring the Arts: Fall Internship Program
Deadline: All applications will be due in school in the beginning of October
Description: ETA places students as apprentices with professional artists and as interns at arts organizations and cultural institutions during after-school, weekend, and summer hours. Participating students additionally receive one-on-one mentorship from ETA program staff and partake in group meetings and field trips with fellow students in the program

Museum of the City of New York: Saturday Academy
Deadline: Early October
Description: Museum of the City of New York offers a weekly after school program that examines community through the lens of an urban planner/architect. Students will explore East Harlem through neighborhood walks to understand zoning and mixed land use in urban areas. Students will practice skills that professional architects use by surveying a site, creating a site plan, drafting and making 3-D models. Other topics will also be explored to contribute to the culminating project and final presentation.

New York Historical Society: Student Historian Internship

Description: The New-York Historical Society offers the Student Historian Internship program for high school students in grades 10, 11 and 12 in the tri-state area. The New-York Historical Society is able to offer a select number of New York City high school students’ compensation for participating in the Student Historian Internship Program. All applicants attending NYC high schools will be considered for this opportunity, but unpaid internships may be offered to candidates who are not offered paid positions. Program Dates: November through June

Smack Mellon: Art Ready

Description: Art Ready is a Mentorship/Internship Program designed to give high school students the opportunity to experience firsthand what it is like to be a professional working in a visual arts discipline. On weekday afternoons from 4 to 6 pm from October through May, the group of students will visit the studios and workplaces of 18 different artists and arts professionals. Art Ready has mentors in the fields of public art, film, painting, interior design, sculpture, decorative painting, architecture, installation art, video, and photography. After the group has visited all 12 mentors, each student will choose 1 artist to intern with from February to June, completing 40 hours.

Futures and Options: Fall Career Essentials Program

Description: Futures and Options provides New York City high school students with mentored internships in business, finance, computer technology, the arts, retailing, news media, hotel management, and non-profit. Goals 1- to develop, motivate, and encourage students to pursue their educational and professional careers by acquiring the attitudes and skills necessary for success. Goal 2- To create a pool of qualified entry-level workers for the business community. Futures and Options Career Essentials Program is a series of 2-hour workshops held once a week for 11 weeks. Two cycles are offered each year- fall and spring. Participants learn resume and cover letter writing, interview and presentation skills, workplace etiquette, time management and are provided with exposure to various career options and opportunity to network.
